Four Levy County Permit Applications Now Under District Review

A dock, a lake crossing, a silviculture road project and a Chiefland water-use request have entered the Suwannee River Water Management District's public review queue.

What was filed

The Suwannee River Water Management District has logged four pending applications touching Levy County on its Notice of Receipt of Application(s) page, which lists permit requests received in the preceding 30 days under Chapter 373, Florida Statutes. None of these applications have been approved or denied. Receipt only means the district has opened a file and begun review.

The Levy County entries, by application number and date received:

  • 255908-1, Rogers Family Dock, an Environmental Resource Permit (ERP) General application, received Oct. 7, 2026.
  • 250093-4, Straughn Blue Pete Lake, a Works of the District (WOD) General application spanning Alachua and Levy counties, received Oct. 19, 2026.
  • 255995-1, Station Pond/Sanchez Tract Roads, a Silvicultural Exemption application, received Oct. 20, 2026.
  • 256061-1, Black Mesa Chiefland Project, a Water Use Permit (WUP) Individual application, received Oct. 28, 2026.

What each permit type covers

An ERP General application typically applies to smaller-scale construction affecting wetlands or surface water, such as a private dock. A WOD General permit covers activities tied to district-owned or district-regulated water control structures, which in this case involves work near Blue Pete Lake that straddles the Alachua-Levy line. A Silvicultural Exemption is not a standard permit at all, it is a claim that forestry-related road work on the Sanchez Tract qualifies for exemption from ERP review under state forestry practices. A WUP Individual application, the category covering the Black Mesa project near Chiefland, is the district’s mechanism for reviewing requests to withdraw groundwater or surface water, and typically draws more scrutiny than general permits because it can affect aquifer levels and nearby wells.

What the district has not decided

The notice is procedural. It confirms that paperwork has arrived and assigned a tracking number, nothing more. The district has not issued a staff report, scheduled a hearing, or made any finding on environmental impact, water availability, or compliance for any of these four files. Technical Staff Reports, when produced, lay out the district’s preliminary analysis and are the documents that typically precede a permit decision.

How to follow or weigh in

Anyone wanting to track these applications, including neighbors near Blue Pete Lake, landowners near the Sanchez Tract, or residents near the Chiefland water-use site, can view underlying application documents through the district’s E-Permitting portal by searching the application numbers listed above. The district says people who want to stay informed of further proceedings, or who want a copy of a Technical Staff Report once one is issued, must submit a written request to regulatory-support@srwmd.org or PublicRecordsRequest@srwmd.org. The district has not set hearing dates or comment deadlines for any of the four Levy County files as of this notice; all four remain in the review stage with no action required of the public yet.

Why it matters here

Levy County’s water table and surface drainage are shared resources, and the Suwannee River Water Management District’s jurisdiction extends through Chiefland and into the rural interior near the Sanchez Tract. A new individual water-use permit application in Chiefland is the kind of filing that merits watching because WUP Individual reviews can involve conditions on pumping volume or monitoring requirements that affect nearby wells. The Blue Pete Lake and dock applications are smaller in scope but reflect the routine pace of construction and water-related activity along the district’s Levy County footprint. Florida & Cedar Key News will follow these files through the district’s Technical Staff Report stage and report any permit decisions, conditions or hearings as they are scheduled.
