The College of Southern Maryland Theatre Department will present “The Revolutionists” during early March on its La Plata campus. The production features a bold comedy about four historical women navigating the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror, with performances scheduled for March 6 and 7 at 7:30 p.m., and March 8 at 3 p.m. in the Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater.

The play brings together playwright Olympe De Gouge, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle in a story set during 1793 Paris. According to the production description, these characters confront extremist violence while exploring themes of feminism, activism, and legacy through a dream-tweaked comedic lens.

CSM Theater Production Explores Revolutionary Women

The theatrical work examines how these four real historical figures lived boldly during one of history’s most turbulent periods. The narrative addresses the transformation of a hopeful people’s revolution into what the play describes as hyper-violent rhetoric, raising questions about its relevance to modern audiences.

The production combines elements of historical drama with contemporary commentary on violence, art, and social change. The play’s structure blends fact with fiction, presenting itself simultaneously as a true story, total fiction, and a theatrical examination of the creative process itself.

Additional Campus Events Throughout March

Meanwhile, the college has scheduled several other community events for March. The Emily Creswick Writer’s Process Series will feature Alex Walker, a digital media coordinator and CSM alumna, on March 3 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the La Plata Campus Writing Center.

Walker, who graduated from CSM in 2022, brings five years of digital marketing experience to the monthly series designed for students, faculty, and community members. The series focuses on discussing various writing processes with local writers and professionals.

Dual Enrollment Information Sessions Scheduled

Additionally, CSM will host virtual Dual Enrollment Information Nights for three counties. St. Mary’s County residents can attend on March 3, Calvert County on March 4, and Charles County on March 5, all running from 6 to 8 p.m. via Zoom.

The college will also offer a Virtual Registration Assistance Session on March 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. This online session covers essential topics including myMail account setup, course registration, financial aid information, and textbook purchasing for new and returning students.

Benny C. Morgan Concert Series Features Renowned Pianist

In contrast to the theatrical offerings, CSM will present pianist Brian Ganz on March 14 at 2 p.m. on the Prince Frederick Campus. Ganz, a laureate of prestigious international piano competitions, has performed with orchestras including the Baltimore Symphony and National Symphony.

The Washington Post has praised Ganz for creating performances that leave audiences “not only exhilarated by the power of the performance but also moved by his search for artistic truth,” according to the concert announcement. The Benny C. Morgan Concert Series event offers free admission to the public.

Spring Break and Anniversary Celebration Planned

The college will close for spring break from March 16 through 22. However, campus activities will resume with the Kids and Teen College 40th Anniversary Bash and Summer Program Fair on March 28 at the La Plata Campus.

The family-friendly event will take place in Parking Lot 3, with a rain location in the Chiaramonte Center for Science and Technology. Families can meet local summer program providers while enjoying carnival-style games, treats, and an egg hunt celebrating four decades of youth programming.

All events remain scheduled as announced, though the college has not indicated whether any programming adjustments might occur. Interested attendees can find registration information and additional details on the CSM website for individual events throughout the month.
