Apple has unveiled its latest MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops featuring the new M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips as part of its ongoing March product rollout. The tech giant announced the new MacBook models on Tuesday, bringing enhanced processing power and increased storage capacity across its laptop lineup. However, these improvements come with higher price tags, as the company has raised base prices by $100 across several models.
The MacBook Air, which serves as Apple’s volume seller, now starts at $1,099, representing a $100 increase over last year’s model. According to Apple, the new Air comes equipped with the M5 processor and doubles the base storage to 512GB, up from the previous 256GB configuration.
Apple M5 Pro and M5 Max Chips Introduce Fusion Architecture
The company’s new M5 Pro and M5 Max processors incorporate what Apple calls Fusion Architecture, which combines two dies into a single processor. Both chips can be configured with 18-core CPUs that include 6 “super cores” and 12 new “performance cores,” according to the company’s specifications.
These advanced processors will power the new MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch models. Additionally, Apple emphasized the laptops’ enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities, claiming the MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip delivers up to 6.9 times faster LLM prompt processing compared to the M1 Pro.
Enhanced AI Performance and Storage Upgrades
Meanwhile, the MacBook Pro equipped with the M5 Max offers 8 times faster AI image generation than the MacBook Pro with the M1 Max, according to Apple’s performance claims. These improvements position the new MacBook models as significant upgrades for users working with artificial intelligence applications and machine learning tasks.
In contrast to previous generations, Apple has substantially increased base storage across the MacBook Pro lineup. The M5 Pro model now starts with 1TB of storage, double the 512GB offered in the M4 Pro. Similarly, the M5 Max model now provides 2TB of base storage, compared to the M4 Max’s 1TB.
MacBook Pro Pricing Reflects Premium Positioning
However, these enhancements come at a premium cost for consumers. The base MacBook Pro 14-inch with a standard M5 chip starts at $1,699, up from $1,599 last year. The price increase continues across higher-tier configurations.
The MacBook Pro 14-inch with the M5 Pro chip carries a $2,199 price tag, while the M5 Max version starts at $3,599. For customers seeking maximum performance, a fully configured MacBook Pro 16-inch with all available upgrades reaches $7,349.
Market Implications and Product Strategy
The pricing strategy reflects Apple’s continued positioning of its MacBook lineup as premium products targeting professional users and creative professionals. The combination of enhanced AI capabilities, increased storage, and more powerful processors justifies the higher prices according to the company’s value proposition.
Additionally, the March rollout timing aligns with Apple’s typical spring product refresh cycle. The new MacBook models join other products announced during this period, maintaining the company’s steady release schedule.
Orders for the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models are expected to begin soon, though Apple has not confirmed specific availability dates. The company typically begins shipping new products within weeks of announcement, though exact delivery timelines remain uncertain at this time.
