• In 1927, two local newspapers, The Williston Sun and The Levy County News joined forces to print a LEVY COUNTY DEVELOPMENT EDITION profiling local businesses and their contribution to the economy.
One of the featured businesses was the Montbrook Crate Company. The company employed 80 workers making it a community prosperity feeder with its payrolls.
At that time, Montbrook thrived on one industry, the Montbrook Crate Company. The company was organized in 1924 when J.T. Flowers, the present owner, bought all the stock in the old Montbrook Veneer & Basket Company.

  • H.W. of Cedar Key writes, “You’ve been writing about golf carts lately, but I have a beef about another kind of nuisance on the roadways... bicycles. There’s this guy who rides his bicycle about in the middle of the road all the time and I’m tired of it. Isn’t he supposed to get out of MY way, not the other way around? Who has the right-of-way on State Road 24 coming into town...my car or his bike?”

    Dear H. W.,

  •  The most fertile source of insight is hindsight and you never know how far you’ve come until you look back on where you’ve been. During the last few years I’ve had numerous opportunities to look back over my progress, sometimes it’s with humor, sometimes it’s with pride and always with amazement over how I thought issues would turn out and how things really unfolded.

  • County budget time is my least favorite time of year.

  • Question: M.T., of Horseshoe Beach, writes, “I was stopped by a police officer the other night because I had kind of drifted through a stop sign. He said I didn’t come to a complete stop. He smelled alcohol on my breath and asked me to step out of the car and perform some field sobriety tests.

  • I would like to respond to media reports that the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is selling your personal information.

  • THE ISSUE:  Florida DMV sells personal information to data-mining companies.

OUR OPINION: A bad practice that should end.

  • "All political power is inherent in the people."

Article I, Section 1, Florida State Constitution

"All meetings of any collegial public body of the executive branch of state government or of any collegial public body of a county, municipality, school district, or special district, at which official acts are to be taken or at which public business of such body is to be transacted or discussed, shall be open and noticed to the public..."

  • It used to be easy to answer that question but the more we learn about food’s impact on our health and environment, this decision has become more and more complicated.  The pesticides, herbicides and industrial systems that produce our foods are polluting our world and threatening our health, particularly those we count on to grow our food.

  •  Q. A judgment has been entered against me, but i didn’t know about it. Can they do that?

  • If Cedar Key depends greatly on visitors’ spending, why are visitors denied access to public restrooms?

Last Saturday, I brought three children from Gainesville to fish on the pier.  The pier was filled with many sight seeing and fishing visitors.  The police locked the restrooms at 6 p.m. when the pier was filled with people.

Yes, I know the bars have restrooms but I am sure it’s not the best practice to drag children and family in to use restrooms, when not a customer.

  •  The members of Cedar Key Volunteer Fire & Rescue would like to send a big “thank you” to all who helped make our military recognition project a huge success. When we set out to do this project, we wanted to make an impact on the community as they crossed the Number 4 Bridge. We had no idea just how big of an impact it would have.

First, we would like to say thank you to the men and women of the Cedar Key area who have enlisted in the military to help protect our freedom. We are extremely proud of you all.

  • I was in Gainesville a few days last week, and before I left Friday morning to come home, my friend, Gail called to tell me about the display of our military names and flags. Upon riding into town and seeing it, she got chills and started to cry.
