“Ms. Betty” Walker spoke to the Chiefland Rotary Club Wednesday, July 26, as executive director of Levy County Arc to ask for “help.” Walker is also mayor of Chiefland.

The Levy County Arc is a chapter of The Arc, the largest community-based national organization advocating for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD).

On the national level The Arc represents individuals with I/DD and their families by affecting public policy. Local chapters, like Levy Arc, affect changes on a local level and provide basic services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Some but not all the services Levy Arc and other chapters provide include job training, supported employment, early intervention, transition planning, respite care, occupational and physical therapy. The list is endless and is determined on individual needs. Levy Arc cannot provide all these services on funding from the government.

That is why Walker appealed to the Chiefland Rotary Club; to announce a planned fundraiser and ask for help to promote and staff, “The ride to provide.”

For those not familiar with the ride Walker explained, “It’s a motorcycle ride that in the past has been a good fundraiser for Levy Arc. This year, I want to make it a family affair with food and activities at the end. But I need help. With our tight budget, the Levy Arc is down to only six staff people.”

The ride is scheduled for Oct. 28, 2017, and will start at the Levy Arc and finish at U.S. Highway 19 at the Waccasassa Bridge. Registration and check-in will start at 7:30 a.m., with kickstands up at noon. Riders are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes.

And of course there will be food in addition to a jump house and pony ride for the younger kids and two zip lines intended for kids of any age. She also plans to have a raffle and sell sponsorships on the back of a t-shirt.

When asked about her mayoral role, Walker said, “The city is fine.”
