Cheyenne Clanton, age 13, and a 7th grader at Cedar Key School recently won the 2nd place trophy for the County competition of the Tropicana Speech Contest. This was her 3rd level of competition.

According to Marci Wilcox, Cheyenne has already gained confidence and increased ability as a public speaker. Marci’s husband, Jim, guides the young Gavel Club members as they learn the ropes of public speaking.

Cheyenne is the president of the Cedar Key Gavel Club, which is now meeting with the Cedar Key Toastmasters Club the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month at 4 pm at the Cedar Key Library.

An effort is underway to begin having Gavel Club meet- ings at the Cedar Key School. The club teaches speaking skills, as well as how to run a club meeting efficiently - skills that everyone can use well into adulthood.
