Cedar Key Women's Club supports our troops

-A A +A

The Cedar Key Woman’s Club recently donated $2,000 to the Fisher House of Gainesville. Presenting the donation at the Malcolm Randall VA Medical Center on behalf of the CKWC, Eileen Senecal proudly poses with Michelle Howard, the Fisher House Manager. Eileen Senecal represents and lives the spirit of giving to this worthy cause—a cause she initiated 7 years ago.

The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership that supports America’s military in their time of need, according to the Fisher House purpose statement. Thanks to Eileen, the CKWC has been a part of the Fisher House program from the ground up. Though the Fisher House has been open for just over 3 years, the CKWC began fund-raising in 2011 by purchasing pavers for the Walk Of Courage, a walking path from the Fisher House to the VA hospital. This initial effort has established both a firm foundation for Fisher House and a dedicated commitment from the Cedar Key Woman’s Club. Subsequently, the CKWC has supported Fisher House by a yearly raffle--a hand made quilt created by CKWC members. Over time, the CKWC donation to Fisher House of Gainesville has amounted to $9,500.00.

Fisher Houses serve members of our Armed Forces, retirees, veterans, and their families. By offering shelter and support during a medical crisis, Fisher House provides a comforting ‘home away from home’ while a loved one receives medical care. Thanks to generous donations from public and private sources, no Gainesville Fisher House family pays for their stay. Lately, Eileen Senecal has had reason to spend time at Fisher House as a family member resident. The CKWC Fisher House fund-raising project has come full circle, rather like a warm embrace of community and comfort given.
