    By filling out a survey card or making a phone call, anglers can provide Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists valuable information about red snapper and other reef fish.
    Biologists distribute survey cards year-round to anglers along the Gulf coast, to gather information about fishing trips targeting red snapper.

  • Fishing in discolored water has...

    Ok folks, it’s nice to see the rain. Man, it’s nice.
    Things to expect after the rain: the inside waters will most likely have a red tint. This happens when the roots of the woods drain into the gulf. Tanic acids change the color of the water. If the rain lets up to a normal amount, the water will settle pretty quick. Now I know most think this is a bad thing. Well, if you use it to your advantage, it can be a good thing.

  • CK dolphins noted for feeding...

    Researchers from the University of Massachusetts say there’s something special about Cedar Key dolphins.
    “They have unique feeding behaviors not seen anywhere else in the world,” said PhD candidate Stefanie Gazda in a phone interview Friday.
    Gazda heads up the Cedar Key Dolphin Project, a program that operates in the area for a few short weeks each year aimed at a better understanding the creatures and the environment they live in.

  • Crowds come out for Memorial Day...

    Hope everyone’s Memorial Day was a safe success. The town was full. It seemed like just a step or two under a festival. The water ways, the streets and the sidewalks were busy.
    Me and Capt. Nick stayed in town to cut back on pulling the boat all around. We had double booked both days. We also had a friend/ client’s family in town for his 60th birthday. And his exact words were, “ Cedar Key and fishing with Capt. Danny is my favorite thing to do”.

  • Chiefland Rotary fishing...

    The Chiefland Rotary Club will host its annual fishing tournament this weekend in Cedar Key. The event begins with a mandatory captains’ meeting on Friday at 6 p.m. at the Cedar Key Community Center. Anglers have until weigh-ins at 4 p.m on Saturday to catch the biggest fish.
    Recent fishing restrictions in the Gulf of Mexico limit the competition haul to five trout and two redfish total.
    First place for biggest trout and biggest redfish can earn up to $500 in prize money.

  • Old Town man injured by jumping...

    An Old Town man was injured Friday at about 10:30 a.m. when he collided with a sturgeon that jumped out of the Suwannee River in front of his boat. It's the first sturgeon strike this year.
     Christopher Jordan Marlo's injuries were not life-threatening, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigators.

  • Trickling river doesn’t keep...

    John Edwards, clad in Spandex shorts and a torn T-shirt adorned with an airbrushed hog in a canoe, smiled as he paddled down the tea-colored waters of the Waccasassa River, effortlessly hefting his thin frame over the fallen log at the end of the race he’s competed in for 34 years.
    “It’s a fun race to do,” the St. Petersburg resident said after coming in first Saturday in the Experienced Class division of the 35th Annual Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race in Otter Creek.
