  • Lady Sharks show promise in...

There was a win inside the Lady Sharks' 44-24 season opening loss to Bronson.

"We made a pledge to win the fourth quarter," Cedar Key varsity girls? head coach Chris Cowart said. "We did it. We outscored them 13-8."

Cedar Key persevered in the face of a double-digit first half deficit, the result of letting early game jitters get the better of them. Bronson rolled up a 13-0 first quarter lead, led by Elizabeth Gay's points in the paint, before the Sharks recovered their composure and started chipping.

  • Personal victories at districts...

Mount Dora is no place to PR, but Zoe Stuber did it at last week's Class A District 3 cross country meet. Mount Dora Bible hosted the district meet Thursday, on a course that has been described as "challenging," "brutal," and "get ready for the worst times of the season."

The campus is draped over a bowl in the rolling hills north of Orlando, and due either to the whim of fate or the caprice of the folks who laid out the course, most of the downhills are on energy-reflecting asphalt, while most of the uphills are on energy-sucking grass.

  • Cross country heads up to...

Sharks cross country goes down to Mt. Dora Bible for the district meet today, Nov. 1. Sharks hope to advance to regional action as a result of this race. Girls run at 4:30, boys at 5:00.

  • Pigskin Picks: 'Radio...

This week's Pigskin Pick veers back to the modern era with a fairly recent film - Michael Tollin's 2003 movie 'Radio.' I didn't go see this movie in the theater because the trailer looked awful ? contrived, emotionally manipulative and far-fetched.

  • Sharks VB falls 3-0 to St. John...

Cedar Key volleyball called it a season Monday with a 3-0 loss in the district tournament to St. John Lutheran, last year's state runner up for Class A.

"We started out strong, broke serve and went up 6-0," said head coach Aaron Haldeman.

"They called time out and we weren't able to hold on, losing 18-25 (in the first game). We never bounced back."

The Sharks were eliminated in three games, and finished the season with a 5-10 record.

  • Cedar Key boys win Levy County...

There was a book published in Britain in 1958 called "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner." While the plot doesn't match the reality of the local runners at Williston High School, you can't help but think of the title as racers disappear into the distance, only to resurface several minutes later pushing for the finish line.
