Lady Sharks made the most out of the long road trips as they went up to Branford Tournament and played very well. The girls lost both matches, 44-26 to Branford and 46-34 to Bronson, but both finals were a major improvement over prior meetings.

"Cedar Key's gotten so much better since the last time we played them," said Bronson head coach Greg Hamilton.

"You can really tell they're putting in the work."

A great loss isn't quite an oxymoron. It's the one where you did pretty much everything right.

Cedar Key boys played Hernando Christian almost perfectly Thursday night, playing good defense, keeping turnovers low and free throw shooting high.

It wasn't quite enough to avoid the last-second, 55-53 loss.

HCA had a couple of pieces that were just unstoppable, in can't-miss shooter Martin George and big man Clay Kessler. Both of them dogged the Sharks shot for shot, and Kessler was both the irresistible force and the immovable object around the basket.

Cedar Key boys improved to 2-2 when they gutted out a white-knuckle 43-41 win over visiting Branford.

David Bishop and Joseph Bishop led Cedar Key scorers with 12 points each, and John Perry had 12 points for Branford.

The Sharks jumped out to a 12-7 lead in the first quarter, but let the Buccaneers chisel their way back in on the back of heavy defense and attentive shooting.

Lady Sharks basketball played tough against visitor Seven Rivers, surprising the Lady Warriors before retiring in a 38-22 loss.

"One of our goals every game is to shoot more free throws than the opposing team," Sharks head coach Chris Cowart said. "This time, we did it in the first half, and beat them 11-6."

With Cedar Key's young team, Cowart is teaching the game even as they run the floor.

"We work on these little goals, and as we achieve them, we try to move up to bigger ones."
