    To celebrate National Wildlife Refuge Week 2012, the Lower Suwannee NWR had several events throughout the week.  The celebratory ribbon cutting for the grand opening of the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge classroom was anticlimactic compared to the exciting events for the remainder of the day.

  • FWC makes it easier for Florida...

    Florida veterans wishing to enter the commercial fishing industry may soon be able to do so more easily thanks to changes made at the Sept. 5-6 Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) meeting in Tampa.

    These changes are anticipated to take effect on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2012.

    The Commission implemented a new program that will modify income requirements for Florida veterans seeking a commercial restricted species endorsement license.

  • Trophy bass tagging study...

    Trophy bass tagging study already revealing

    This past spring, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists tagged 136 trophy largemouth bass greater than eight pounds in Florida’s public waters. Each trophy bass had a yellow plastic dart tag inserted into the back of the fish just below the dorsal (back) fin.

    Each tag has a unique number that identifies a monetary reward value and information on how to report catches.

  • CAAA Football Turkey Shoot

     The Chiefland Area Athletic Association will host a turkey shoot from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Strickland Park in Chiefland. The family event will offer prizes, food, drink and T-shirts. The Deer Camp Expo will also be on-hand, offering bow adjustments, bow supplies, bow maintenance and helpful tips and pointers. The event supports the CAAA.

  • Luke Corbitt Memorial Fishing...

    A tournament to honor the memory of Lucas “Luke” Corbitt will be held  Sept. 1 at the Waccasassa Boat Ramp in Gulf Hammock. Cash prizes of $100 will be rewarded for biggest red, biggest trout and biggest combination.

      There is a $25 entry fee. Call 352-273-5831 for advanced registration. Day-of registration starts at 6 a.m.

  • Hunter safety Internet-...

    The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is offering a free hunter safety Internet-completion course in Levy County. 

    The class is Aug. 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students who have taken the online course and wish to complete this classroom portion must bring the online-completion report with them. 

    The location for this class will be given to those who register in advance by calling the regional FWC office at 386-758-0525 or going to http://www.MyFWC.com/HunterSafety.
