Sharks Track and Field will send six athletes to next week's regional meet at Jacksonville's Bolles High School after some outstanding individual performances at Monday's district meet at Oak Hall.

The meet was marred by the injuries of Cedar Key's Hunter Cannon and Shawna Fenton in unrelated accidents over the weekend. Fenton was able to compete, albeit limited by back pain, but Cannon's injuries are more serious.

With 98 points, Cedar Key girls won the team scoring at Tuesday's running of the Levy County Track Meet, and Shark boys placed second in their competition with 83.5.

Host Cedar Key head coach Brad Penney proudly informed the crowd in attendance that another school record had been set with Samantha Beckham's 10'0" pole vault success.

"That's also a tie for state runner-up among 1A schools," he said.

Boys also had an outstanding outing, narrowly falling behind Williston in team scoring.

Cedar Key girls won at Chiefland in Friday's meet, with an overpowering team score of 140 to 104 for second-place Bell. Key to the win were dominant performances by Sam Beckham and Kacey Miller, including Miller's new school record in the high jump at 5'3 1/2".

Cedar Key boys fared less well, coming in last among full teams with 68 points; as at the Cedar Key Relays last week, a shortage of team members hobbled their performance. Fortunately, senior Justin Speegle is back and ready to murder his events in next week's county meet.

Sharks baseball got off to a great start against Branford in the rain Tuesday, holding onto a 5-3 lead through the fifth inning, but eventually falling 15-5 as the Buccaneers staged a monster rally in the seventh.

Cedar Key had a nice second inning, as leadoff Ryan Alford got them started with a single and was brought home by Billy O'Dell. O'Dell moved over when Jacob Crosby was hit by the pitch, and both came home off a two-RBI single by Aaron Esposito.
