  • Sharks chomp visitors, set for...

    Sharks devoured the competition last week when they hosted the Levy County track meet in Rosewood. Cedar Key track head coach Brad Penney said his girls took first place overall, and boys were second.

    “Samantha Beckham won the long jump with a best of 16'7”, a new school record, but she broke the school record on all three tries,” Penney said.

  • Cheerleaders take first

    In their first-ever competition, the Cedar Key School Varsity Cheer Squad proved themselves ready by winning first place in their class nationally. The squad’s two-and-a-half minute routine featured cheering, tumbling, jumping and dance.

    “We are the Contest of Champions Small High School National Champions,” said coach Kim Bishop.

    The awards were presented Saturday night at the Wide World of Disney Sports Complex. The girls received a trophy, banner, and plaque that are all on display at the school.

  • Sharks baseball season kicks off

  • Sharks cheer their way to...

    The Cedar Key Varsity Cheerleaders head to Orlando this week to compete in their first-ever competition. The Disney-sponsored Contest of Champions will be held at the Wide World of Sports on Saturday and will feature 52 squads.

    “I’ve been wanting to do this ever since sixth grade,” said Jordan Watson. “Now I’m a senior and we’re getting to do it.”

    The six cheerleaders that make up the CKS team, including two seniors, three juniors and one freshman, raised approximately $4000 through various fundraisers for the four day trip.

  • Racing for Maryann Statham

    26.2 With Donna: The National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer is the sole marathon in America whose entire raised funds go towards breast cancer research and care. On Feb. 15th, Ken Edmunds will be running in the Donna Foundation's half marathon event in Jacksonville in memory of his mother, Maryann Statham.

    Maryann lost her battle with breast cancer in 1999. She lived in Cedar Key for about 18 years, and both Maryann and her mother, "Ms. El" Travers, were well known and loved in the community.

  • Homecoming Week!

    Homecoming basketball games are:

    MS Girls: 4 p.m.

    MS Boys: 5 p.m.

    Varsity Girls 6 p.m.

    Varsity Boys 7:30 p.m.

    A student dance in the auditorium will follow immediately after the games. Concurrently, a party will be held in the gymnasium for all community members.

  • Shark Soccer Team

    Both Shark soccer teams played this Saturday. The purple teams score against the orange Chiefland team was 3 to 6 with the Sharks losing. The scorer for the game was Jadah Donaldson. The game started out with the Sharks making the first goal of the game, ending the half with the score 2 to 3. The second half was just as disappointing ending with the 3 to 6 score.

    The Yellow Sharks team game was much closer but still ineffective.

  • After districts, Sharks look...

    Frankie Beckham shattered his course time at Mt. Dora from last season, shaving a full three minutes to finish the district meet in 21:31.

    Joseph Bishop dropped almost two minutes from his time last year for a 21:35 finish. Aaron Esposito took more than three minutes off his course time and battled yearlong Seven Rivers foe Jacob Benoit into the chute.

  • Dustin Berger lives life to the...

    Twenty-two-year-old Dustin Burger, an active volunteer in the community, is the new assistant basketball coach for Cedar Key Middle School boys. He works under the direction of head coach Norman “Biz” Paeth.

    “I love it,” Dustin said of his new responsibilities.

    Dustin brings 4 years of competitive ball experience and unbridled enthusiasm to the team. He played for Cedar Key Middle from 2003-2007. Joshua, his younger brother, plays for the team.

  • Boys win at Chiefland; girls get...

    Cedar Key's Joseph Bishop got another second place finish in a Levy County cross country meet - this time at Chiefland, behind Ft. White's Matthew Waddington, whom he'd beaten at Williston two weeks before.

    Bishop grouched for a few minutes, complained that Waddington "had a better stride," then allowed as how this was his best race ever.

    Alex Travis of Williston, who finished just behind Bishop, said he, too, had run his best race on the shady course.

    "It was nice and cool under the trees," he said.
