    Making the best of winter fishing

     Hey everyone we haven't had a whole lot to talk about recently so my stories are slim. We have a 'lil life showing in the northern creeks to the south of the Suwannee River. The redfish are shorts to smaller keepers sizes. The creeks are also holding nice keeper sheepshead and a few trout.

    Cedar Key children take part in...

    The Salty Needle Quilt Shop opened its doors to a small group of kids for a sewing camp that ran a total of five days, Aug. 4-8, sewing something new and exciting each day. The children got to shop in the store for material needed for their projects, adding their very own touch to everything they completed.
    Projects included: a pillow, chicken pin cushion, draw string bag, teddy bear and outfit, shorts and designed T-shirt.  Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Bunny were amazing, patient and instilled a new love into all that attended.

    Camp Safe Haven: Helping families...

    Haven Hospice is offering a free, grief-support experience for families through the Camp Safe Haven program. The experience will help families understand their feelings of loss and give them an opportunity to heal.

    Camp Safe Haven Family Camp will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Otter Springs Park and Campground, located at 6470 SW 80th Avenue in Trenton.

    LCDPS firefighter wins Valor Award

    Levy County Department of Public Safety Firefighter Jeremy Pittman was selected as an honoree at the 97.3 The SKY Valor Awards, a recognition of first responders in the Heart of Florida. On Thursday, June 29, several members of the surrounding communities were recognized for their dedication to service.

    Pittman came to LCDPS in October of 2012 as a 19-year-old with no background in public safety. He had passed by the Fire Station in his rural community several times thinking about volunteering in an effort to fulfill his desire of giving back to his community.

    COPS volunteers honored on...

    Personnel from the Levy County Sheriff's Office, family members and Sheriff's COPS (Citizens On Patrol) members  honored Tom and Donna Munsell on their retirement from the volunteer group on July 14.

    Tom Munsell was a part of the second volunteer academy taught at LCSO in the early 1990’s.  During his many years of service he donated 2,122 volunteer hours to the citizens of Levy County. 

    Donna Munsell donated an additional 751 volunteer hours.

    Florida landmark relocated

    The Cape San Blas lighthouse, located 12-miles south of the city of Port St. Joe on the south point of the St. Joseph Peninsula, is no stranger to the effects of erosion. First lighted in 1849, the lighthouse fell down during a gale in 1851. The light was rebuilt in 1856 but destroyed two months later.

    Giant lives on in Goethe

    Some say it sprang to life more than 900 years ago, gradually pushing its way up through the Levy County muck in a time when, on the European continent, people were still living in the Dark Ages and setting out on what would be the first of many attempts to reconquer the Holy Land.

    Helping them on their way

    Susan Rosenthal, Cedar Key Woman’s Club President, presented a check to Janeice Smith and CKS Principal Darby Allen surrounded by the 5th grade students.

    The donation will help offset the cost of the Cedar Key Safety Patrol’s trip to Washington, D.C.

    Cedar Key Woman’s Club elects new...

    On March 26, the Cedar Key Woman’s Club hosted a much attended installation dinner at the Steamer’s Restaurant in Cedar Key.  Out with the “old” and in with the “new,” as they say and, the officers being installed will serve the ladies’ club from March 31, 2014 until March 31, 2016.  The previous officers were very hard to replace and the club has grown to 47 members in the past four years.

    Cedar Key commemorating 50 years of...

     As preparations are finalized for the 50th Annual Spring Arts Festival in Cedar Key on April 12 & 13, a new mural to commemorate the event is taking shape in downtown Cedar Key. Plans for the mural have been in the works for over a year, according to festival coordinator, Bev Ringenberg, but the first “real paint” went up on the wall last Friday morning.

    “Moe” turns 80

    Charles “Moe” Beckham turned 80 years young on March 4.

    Mr. Moe was surprised by his family with breakfast at Ada Blue Cafe.

    He was also featured on TV 20’s birthday segment.

    His family is treating Mr. Moe to a trip to Biloxi, Miss. for some relaxation and fun gambling.

    March 1, 2014, marked the beginning of the Cedar Key Lions' eighth year of Adopt-a-Highway pickup along State Route 24 entering Cedar Key.

    The Lions collected 110 pounds of trash on this first quarterly outing of 2014.
