Today's Opinions

  • From the Kitchen: Winning potluck and party meat dishes

We are officially into the holiday party season now that Thanksgiving has come and gone. Groups, families and employers everywhere are planning their annual gatherings and celebrations. Every such event will have one central theme - food. As far back as time goes, a feast has always been the way to fellowship and celebrate with those around us.

  • True Faith: Warning: Alcohol and drugs may kill you!

"What shall we say then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?" (Romans 6:1-2 NIV)

  • Reflections: Turkeys are still around

I'll bet you thought after Thanksgiving you wouldn't see any more turkey. Well, guess what? The department stores are full of them.

Turkeys are especially prevalent during the Christmas Holidays. They lurk in every department store in America and go under the guise of "part-time help."

Yes, they are the ones who know absolutely nothing about retail sales, and, why should they? They only work a couple months a year! That seems to be the only time they can get a job.

  • Fishing Lines: The lucky fisherman who got away

Sometimes some of my regular clients will occasionally ask to fish for a specific species, and if they are in season and they have the skills I will oblige. To protect this guy's identity we will call him, lets see... "Dave".

It was about two weeks ago (when the water was warmer), and this guy "Dave" says he would like to catch a cobia. No problem I say, fall is a good time to get a good sized cobia. So I bring the appropriate tackle and cast nets and we are set.

  • From the Kitchen: Ready, set, 'Let's bake!'

This Thanksgiving weekend you will want to have lots of baked goods on hand for your own family and any visiting relatives and friends. In addition to the traditional pumpkin, apple and pecan pies that followed the delicious turkey dinner you served, you may want a few extras to serve with coffee in the morning or as an evening snack.

  • Reflections: 'Kapow!' in the night

My wife and I heard it. The sound came from the electric panel just outside the bedroom. "KAPOW!" Then the lights went out. That was just more bad luck yet to pour from my not so good, good luck cup. The outside meter box had just burned up.

  • True Faith: Don't forget to say 'Thank you'

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful." (Colossians 3:15 NIV)

  • Making things happen in your life

A lot of things in life happen by chance but most things happen because we make them happen. For instance, we usually pick our life-long partners based on how we like them. They just don't happen.

We buy a particular car because we like it. That just didn't happen either or else your car would simply show up in your driveway. But, back to the thing about choosing the right life-long partner: I chose my wife for a good reason.
