  • Fishing Lines: Show a little self-control

I don't know how so many fishing catalog companies get my name and address (I barely know it myself), but during this time of the year I nearly need a wheelbarrow to haul all of them to the house every day.

Well, actually my wife picks up the mail, but these magazines keep her strong.

  • Reflections: Weary winter weather

One of the reasons I returned to Florida when retiring from the U.S. Navy, was to return to a warmer climate. When I left Virginia the Chesapeake Bay was frozen over - one of the worst, coldest years on record for the east coast of the Commonwealth State. The snow followed me all the way to Florida on that memorable trek back home. Florida is where I was born and Florida is where I wanted to stay and I was determined to get there.

  • True Faith: The importance of a good brand name

"And whatever you do in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." (Colossians 3:17 NIV)

  • True Faith: Most Extreme Universal Insurance Plan

"What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26 NIV)

  • Abort-Retry-Fail: Keep in touch

If you have Internet access at your home, you probably rely on email a great deal. So how do you manage your email when you are away from home? It is easier than you might think!

There was a time when the traveler had few choices to communicate back to his or her home or office. It was necessary to find a pay telephone or make the call from the motel/hotel room later in the day.

  • Fishing Lines: Sea bass crazy

My very favorite fish in the frying pan is the black sea bass, and the time to catch them is now. This is the only time of the year that the big males are within reach of my skiff, the spawning season.

The males have a distinctive "hump" just behind their head and their underside has more white coloration, to attract the attention of the females I imagine. Attracting a mate in their world must work up quite an appetite because they feed with reckless abandon during their seasonal ritual.

  • Reflections: Where to go from here

The past has brought me across a large spectrum of life. I have gone from being a mechanic to a teacher with a few other occupations in-between including a stint in the military.

After 24 years of teaching, however, I finally retired to a part time job doing what I love: working at an airport with airplanes.

Alas, though, with taxes and insurance being what they are, and not making very much money working part time, I have given up the airport job for a full time job again.

  • True Faith: Inseparability of Politics and Religion

"When the righteous triumph, there is great elation; but when the wicked rise to power, men go into hiding." (Proverbs 28:12 NIV)

Right in the middle of a heated presidential election, it is not surprising that some folks want to revive the worn out debate over "separation of church and state." The phrase itself doesn't seem to accurately depict what was on the minds of the founders of the United States of America. The big issue on the minds of those early Americans was their intention that our government must not establish a state sponsored church.
