Today's Opinions

  • Conservation Corner

Background: On January 23rd there was an open meeting held at the library to discuss energy conservation and solar energy applications. Because of the high level of interest shown by the Cedar Key citizens at that meeting, Mayor Heath Davis asked Luz Kraujaliz, Connie Nelson and Tom Deverin to form an Energy Advisory Panel. Over the past month or so, Cedar Key residents and community leaders have stared a dialog about what we can do in Cedar Key to enhance efforts to preserve our island community and become better stewards of our environment.

  • Survival of the Fittest

Most of our garden catalogues do not list plant spacing with the pictured variety but do include a separate chart at the back of the publication. The “plant cultural” chart often is on the seed packet listing water, sun, spacing and other requirements for that variety. These are fairly precise requirements and should be a guideline for planting.

  • The Nature of Church

I have been going to church all of my life. As kids, my mother hauled my brothers and me to church every single Sunday. I sang in the choir. I was a member of the youth group. I was an acolyte. I was going to church four or five days a week. Since I have grown up and become a church pastor, it has only gotten worse.

  • Some Hope

I believe God gave me most of this song to write.

    Maybe you’ll identify with it…

    Verse 1

As I walk down the street I see people pass me by.

Faces like zombies they seem to ask me, “Why?

O, why is my life, man, not better than it is?

Pain squeezes my eyes, crawls out from deep inside.”

    Chorus

“I need some hope more than you know,

But I just won’t let my feelings show.

‘Cause too many times my heart has been stepped on.

  • The Birds and Bees of Plant Reproduction

I hear there is quite a buzz going on in town, not only downtown but on the mainland as well. Some say the buzz is flying around like wild fire, while others say it hides in beautiful places. I say this buzz is all about bees! What a stinging answer to this fictitious paragraph.

  • Nurture sincerity in yourself

I recently had the privilege of reading a short letter written by a fellow Christian to a person in jail. The letter was so utterly sincere in its expression of love that it almost brought me to tears. If that was my reaction to a letter not even written to me, I can only imagine what impact it had on the one to whom it was written.

  • Temperature influences plant growth

Many of us have traveled around the USA. Perhaps, some from Oregon to California, others from Maine to Florida, or even to Ohio or Texas. What we all see before us as we travel is climate change over long distances north to south. Our great country has a number of climates such as temperate, subtropical, tropical and even a temperate rain forest on the West Coast. For one country to have such a variation is truly wonderful
