     I recently came to Cedar Key with my husband of 28 years to have a “day away”  from the rat race of the city life. We came over to relax, see a few family members, eat some seafood and attend Homecoming.

  • Today in Levy County History: Cedar Key Scrub Habitat

    On December 13, 1977, Charles Hardee, Chairman of the Levy County Board of County Commissioners and Rollin C. Janney, representing the Levy County Planning and Zoning Commission, held a public hearing to consider the proposed purchase of environmentally endangered lands called the Cedar Key Scrub Habitat. There were 18 persons in attendance and there was no opposition to the proposal.

  • Conservation Corner: Litter, litter and more litter

    Litter is like sunshine, it is everywhere. Energy Advisory Panel members volunteered to assist our school children with the Route 24 Adopt-A-Highway program and  a clean-up at the City Marina on Jan. 12 and 14, respectively. Once you pick-up roadside and community litter you seem to notice it more.  It really is pretty much everywhere.

    In 1927, two local newspapers, The Williston Sun and The Levy County News joined forces to print a LEVY COUNTY DEVELOPMENT EDITION profiling local businesses and their contribution to the economy.
    One of the featured businesses was the Montbrook Crate Company. The company employed 80 workers making it a community prosperity feeder with its payrolls.
    At that time, Montbrook thrived on one industry, the Montbrook Crate Company. The company was organized in 1924 when J.T. Flowers, the present owner, bought all the stock in the old Montbrook Veneer & Basket Company.

  • Angered over Bauer issue

    I just read your current article on the Bauer cat issue. I have been on the Bauer’s property several times. I have never seen an abundance of flies or smelled anything outside the fenced in area. I have also been in the enclosures and did not find an abundance of flies or smells.
    As I visit the area and talk to people around the island they talk about how much good the Bauers have done for the cats and the islands. But they do not  get much help. It actually angers me that all of the slant seems to be ‘against’ them!
