    Question:
Do Members of Congress have to pay into Social Security?
    Answer:

Yes, they do. Members of Congress, the President and Vice President, federal judges, and most political appointees, have paid taxes into the Social Security program since January 1984. They pay into the system just like everyone else, no matter how long they have been in office. Learn more about Social Security benefits at www.socialsecurity.gov.

  • Why young workers should care about Social Security

    By Kay Louder
    Social Security District Manager, Gainesville

Summer will be here before we know it. That means millions of high school and college students will be searching for jobs. Whether a new worker is beginning the career of a lifetime or just earning some extra money for the school year to come, there is one question that is likely to be on each new worker’s mind when they see their first pay stub: Where’s the rest of my money?

  • CKAC president reflects on past year

Dear Cedar Key Art Center members,

  • Does not agree with airboat argument

In response to Mr. Wilson’s response in your May 3, 2012 edition: Mr. Wilson is wrong on all accounts.
    1) The vast majority of fishermen in the area get along just fine without an airboat, including clam farmers who mostly use the “Bird Dog”, a boat designed for net fishing and is propelled by an outboard motor.
    2) Comparing Airboats to a farm is ridiculous. If Mr. Freeman had moved next to a farm, he should expect farm related activities. But, having to lie awake half the night listening to an airboat was surely unexpected.

  • Today in Levy History: Two moonshine stills destroyed in Levy County

    By Toni C. Collins
    Levy County Historian
In December 1955, a local newspaper carried a news article about two moonshine stills in Levy County being destroyed by state and federal agents of the Beverage Department.
One of the stills was located about two miles east of Inglis on County Road 40. It consisted of eight barrels, a 100-gallon pot and was capable of producing 16 five-gallon jugs a week. One International one-ton truck was confiscated.

  • ‘Airboat abomination’ response

Just a brief response to Mr. Freeman from New Jersey.
On the island you purchased property on and apparently liked enough to do so, the airboat is and has been a vital, even essential, part of the fishing industry. Due to the shallow waters that make up this ecosystem, the crab and mullet fisherman and even the clam farmers find their airboat is the only usable boat.
I have seen subdivisions built out in the country to enjoy the rural lifestyle then some petition to move the farms that surround them due to noise or aroma.
