Today's Opinions

  • Our View: Jim Crow of another form

It was just a short time ago that an appeals court in Florida ruled that the Sunshine clause in the state Constitution did not require councils and commissions of counties and municipalities to take public comment during meetings that were required to be open to the public.

The Legislature stepped in and in 2013 told local governing bodies they had to take public comment and to formulate a policy to address the issue.

  • Climate change should not be a political issue
  • Put on your tin foil hats for this conspiracy theory

I don’t care what the three scientists said at last Saturday’s panel discussion which cause the mass evacuation of thousands of birds from Seahorse Key in April 2015.

First rumors said it was a bad spring storm, but the scientists said we have them all the time.

Then it was the poor raccoons turn. That story had my mother-in-law asking, “What have you got against raccoons?”

  • Captain's Log for the week of 5-5-16

As a professional fishing guide I am concerned about the future of the resource that provides me an opportunity to pursue my passion...which of course is fishing. But I am very concerned that too many guides are only concerned about "today's dollar" by a practice that needs to stop, giving away their personal limit to their customers. And some guides do this twice a day which is clearly not legal.

  • Spring warmup rotates catch

Things seem to be heating up offshore. A few red grouper have moved into the shallower water as of late, but the bite is no where near what I would call good. The gags are ready but are still a catch and release issue until June 1.

A few cobia have also been caught in our local waters and I expect them to continue to get better as our water temps continue to rise. I have not heard of any king mackerel so far but they should be in place at their regular haunts.

  • County officials need to answer us

    Mr. John Meeks, Chair

    Levy County Commission

    Levy County Courthouse

    Bronson, FL 32621

    Dear Mr. Meeks:

  • Heartfelt gratitude

The family of Don “Catfish” Richburg would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the love and support from friends, community, and our church family through this difficult time.

We very much appreciate the kind and thoughtful service provided by Knauff’s Funeral Home of Chiefland. A special thank you to pastor Gordon Keller and Travis Hudson for presiding over the funeral service and honoring Don’s wishes by exalting God and his love for us through Jesus and the gift of salvation.

Luck is a funny thing. Google says luck is success or failure apparently brought on by chance rather than through one’s actions. Well as for me I believe in luck. I have always felt lucky to have been born in America, raised by two loving parents who taught me hard work, empathy, dedication, patriotism, integrity, faithfulness, conservation and a million other important values. And luck has been with me most of my life, so you might ask, what is your point?
