    On Saturday May 20, 2017 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Chiefland Rotary Club held its 13th Annual Fishing Tournament in the scenic city of Cedar Key, FL.  The weather for this annual fundraising event was beautiful and the event was safe and successful.  A total of 61 boats had registered to participate in the event.

    A Levy County man and woman face serious drug charges after being charged Thursday night with possessing large amounts of methamphetamine.

    A Citrus County sheriff’s deputy patrolling near the Citrus/Levy county line pulled over a pickup truck for not having working taillights.

  • Sanders returns to Cedar Key for small boat weekend

    The “small boat weekend” in Cedar Key was the second-time Roger Sanders attended the event that is not organization, there are no plans or no program for the annual get-together of trailer sailors in Cedar Key, but the weekend of May 6-7 marked 33 years that small boat sailors have trailered their boats to Cedar Key for a weekend of sailing on the Gulf.

    The 70-year-old Tampa resident has a history with the island community dating back to 1968 as an undergraduate student in biology.

    The Cedar Key FFA is hosting a bottled water and eye drop drive for the firefighters that have been tirelessly working on our wildfires in both south and north Florida. If you are interested in donating bottled water or eye drops to the men and women putting their lives on the line to protect homes, property, and families please drop off goods at Cedar Key School and the FFA will pick them up.

  • Antique Beetle Cat at "small boat weekend"

    Lonnie Black, of Avon Park, took his antique 12-foot fiberglass Beetle Cat to the “small boat weekend” May 6 in Cedar Key though he opted not to put it in the water because of the high wind and his sail was getting old.

    “This boat was built in 1947. This is [one of] the first production fiberglass sailboats ever built,” he said. “This boat is out of the first run of boats built by Carl Beetle. He called it a Beetle Boat Swan.”

  • Cleaning up the streets

    Cedar Key Lions Club volunteers Dale Register, Ralph Selby, Marsha Harrington, Greg Harrington, Douglas Harrington, Joan Selby and Rory Brennan, not pictured, participated in the Lions Adopt-A-Highway roadside trash pickup along the two-mile stretch of State Route 24 leading to the No. 4 bridge. On a breezy, sunny May 6 morning volunteers collected over 80 pounds of trash and road side debris as one of the Cedar Key Lions community service projects.

  • Cedar Key produces trio of medalists at track state championships

    Cedar Key senior Ashlyn Allen slightly bettered her shot put throw that won her a regional championship to finish third in the state in Class 1A last Friday in the Florida High School Track and Field Finals at IMG Academy in Bradenton.

    The school record-holder, who has signed to play softball at St. Petersburg College, posted a 36-foot, ¾-inch toss, beating out the fourth-place throw by fractions of a quarter inch to earn the bronze medal.
