  • Two arrested in torturing tortoises

    Officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) arrested two Clay County teenagers Friday morning on charges of torturing a gopher tortoise.
    Danielle Susan Dionne, 15, and Jennifer Emoke Greene, 18, have been arrested on charges of felony cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony, and taking, harassing, harming or killing a gopher tortoise, a second-degree misdemeanor.

  • Cedar Key to get billboard boost

    Cedar Key and Levy County will get a high profile boost with tourists along Interstate 75 in Gainesville during what is typically a slow season.
    Carol McQueen has been in negotiations to design billboards that tout the county’s attractions to people traveling through Gainesville.

  • Rescue workers respond to two overturned boats

    At about 7 p.m., Friday, July 18, the Levy County 9-1-1 Communications Center received a call reporting an overturned boat with three passengers. Cedar Key Fire and Department of Public Safety Battalion-1 and Medic 5 (Cedar Key) responded to the scene. En route to that call, another call came in for an overturned kayak with two passengers in the water.

  • Camp Safe Haven: Helping families overcome grief

    Haven Hospice is offering a free, grief-support experience for families through the Camp Safe Haven program. The experience will help families understand their feelings of loss and give them an opportunity to heal.

    Camp Safe Haven Family Camp will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Otter Springs Park and Campground, located at 6470 SW 80th Avenue in Trenton.

  • LCDPS firefighter wins Valor Award

    Levy County Department of Public Safety Firefighter Jeremy Pittman was selected as an honoree at the 97.3 The SKY Valor Awards, a recognition of first responders in the Heart of Florida. On Thursday, June 29, several members of the surrounding communities were recognized for their dedication to service.

    Pittman came to LCDPS in October of 2012 as a 19-year-old with no background in public safety. He had passed by the Fire Station in his rural community several times thinking about volunteering in an effort to fulfill his desire of giving back to his community.

  • COPS volunteers honored on retirement

    Personnel from the Levy County Sheriff's Office, family members and Sheriff's COPS (Citizens On Patrol) members  honored Tom and Donna Munsell on their retirement from the volunteer group on July 14.

    Tom Munsell was a part of the second volunteer academy taught at LCSO in the early 1990’s.  During his many years of service he donated 2,122 volunteer hours to the citizens of Levy County. 

    Donna Munsell donated an additional 751 volunteer hours. 

  • New FHP troop commander first female named to post

    The Florida Highway Patrol is proud to announce the appointment of Maj. Eileen Powell to the position of Troop Commander. Her promotion became effective June 16, 2014.

    Powell is the first woman to hold this esteemed position in North Florida and will oversee approximately 101 State Troopers and 10 non-sworn employees.

    Troop B consists of nine counties including: Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Marion and Suwannee.
