  • Sharks VB falls 3-0 to St. John Lutheran in district tourney

    Cedar Key volleyball called it a season Monday with a 3-0 loss in the district tournament to St. John Lutheran, last year's state runner up for Class A.

    "We started out strong, broke serve and went up 6-0," said head coach Aaron Haldeman.

    "They called time out and we weren't able to hold on, losing 18-25 (in the first game). We never bounced back."

    The Sharks were eliminated in three games, and finished the season with a 5-10 record.

While the plot doesn't match the reality of the local runners at Williston High School, you can't help but think of the title as racers disappear into the distance, only to resurface several minutes later pushing for the finish line.

    Roasted Fish Fillets with Dill and Spinach

    Nonstick vegetable oil spray

    4 6-oz skinless fish fillets (such as snapper or flounder)

    1-tablespoon fresh lemon juice

    4 teaspoons Dijon mustard

    8 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill or 2 tablespoon dried dill weed

    1-teaspoon olive oil (preferably extra-virgin)

    2 10-oz packages fresh spinach leaves, stems trimmed, rinsed, drained

    1 garlic clove, minced

    1 lemon, quartered lengthwise

  • Pumpkins are in season!

    Finally, it is time to write about pumpkins! In the past few days there has been a noticeable change in the colors of leaves up here. Even the area around us is boasting some bright reds, oranges and yellows. And, pumpkins of all sizes are everywhere! I know this is the scene in most areas of the country as fall is in our midst. Halloween is upon us and then comes preparation for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays which always means more baking and cooking than usual.

  • Record crowds reported at 38th Annual Seafood Festival

    Unbelievable crowds took Cedar Key by surprise last weekend for the 38th Annual Cedar Key Seafood Festival. Well over 25,000 people joined the island city in celebration of the bounties harvested from Gulf waters. Vendors, business owners and officials reported a better-than-ever year.

  • Festival has grown, but keeps tradition

    The taste of seafood, the sound of music and the sight of a large crowd puts the quiet fishing village of Cedar Key in a Hollywood spotlight every year. This past weekend, the 38th Annual Cedar Key Seafood Festival provided entertainment for thousands from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, according to Judy Johnson, the office manager at the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce. The Cedar Key Lions Club has organized the event every year since it began in 1969, according to Judy Duvall, the immediate, past president of the club.
