  • Jury unanimous: Yearty, Parker guilty

    Levy County Commissioners William Samuel "Sammy" Yearty and Robert Anthony "Tony" Parker were unanimously found guilty by a jury of conspiring and accepting a $10,000 bribe to pay for a trip to New York City in December 2007 in return for favorable treatment of a project proposed by an FBI agent posing as a developer.

    Yearty was also found guilty on a third charge — lying to a federal agent — for denying in an interview that he had accepted a lunch, dinner or gift from anyone.

    Cypress Christmas Party - Dec. 14

    Cypress Station in Sumner will hold its annual community Christmas party on Dec. 14 at 4:30 p.m. Santa will bring a present for every child between the ages 0-11 and refreshments will be served.  

    Sign-up at the store by Friday, Dec. 11 to ensure Santa brings enough gifts for everyone.

  • "Twas the night before in Cedar Key

    ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the isle,

    Not a clammer clamming, they were through for a while.

    Cedar Key was decked out by the people with care;

    Already by airboat, Santa Clam had been there.

    The pelicans were nestled all snug on the dock,

    Dreaming of sweet fishes and next year’s Sock Hop;

    The seagulls they were resting, not causing a flap,

    Planning their strategy for when snowbirds came back.

  • Mayor challenges residents to give books to students

    “If you like to see children read – there’s something you can do to help,” Mayor Sue Colson said Tuesday night at the close of the city budget workshop.

    The middle school library is in need of a full set of the 15 Sunshine State Readers books, Colson said. “The school has two sets, but if you have 10 kids that want to read the same book, they can’t,” she said. “I want that taken care of.”

  • City adopts tentative millage and budget

    After nearly two months of budget workshops – some contentious, some congenial – Cedar Key commissioners adopted a tentative millage and $1.4 million budget this week.

    With approximately $200,000 cut from last year’s operating budget, commissioners decided they would not need to raise the millage. It will remain the same – 3.1355.

    “And that’s no raise in taxes,” said Commissioner Gene Hodges. “That’s exactly what it was last year.”
