    Atlanta-area water-colorist Jim Wilshire, one of the artists coming to this year's Old Florida Celebration of the Arts, double-majored in archaeology and anthropology at Georgia State University, but after graduation he took a corporate job in sales.

    "I had a family to support, so although those were my interests, I really wasn't able to pursue a career," he said.

    I remember an old saying that March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb. Well that is certainly true for this March so far. High winds and bitter cold (for Florida) dominated much of the first half of March, so I am expecting very mild temps to escort the second half of this month out like a lamb.

  • Reflections: Musings on the Tree City

    Out of town for a little while.

    This past week I have been in Tallahassee, Florida taking in some educational courses for my new job. Tallahassee is a beautiful place - except it is just dog gone cold here.

    Living on the west coast of Florida makes you take for granted the usually mild winters we have. It gets considerably colder towards the interior of the State, especially further north, and northwest like in Tallahassee.

  • Baseball falls to Branford in the rain

    Sharks baseball got off to a great start against Branford in the rain Tuesday, holding onto a 5-3 lead through the fifth inning, but eventually falling 15-5 as the Buccaneers staged a monster rally in the seventh.

    Cedar Key had a nice second inning, as leadoff Ryan Alford got them started with a single and was brought home by Billy O'Dell. O'Dell moved over when Jacob Crosby was hit by the pitch, and both came home off a two-RBI single by Aaron Esposito.

  • Shark softball walks over Bell in five

    Lady Sharks middle school softball made their fortune at the plate Tuesday, waiting out the battery against Bell as they walked to a 14-4 win in five innings.

    Cedar Key led from the first inning, turning an error by Bell into a one-run lead. A big inning in the third boosted them to an 11-0 advantage, and a shortened game seemed certain. However, the Bulldogs chipped, getting two runs in the fourth and two in the top of the fifth, narrowing the score to 13-4 and seeming to head off the 10-run rule, at least for the moment.

  • Old Families' Reunion a hit, again

    Lots of laughing, hugs, and telling stories about old times.

    This was the scene at the 10th Annual Cedar Key Old Families Reunion. And don't leave out the aroma of fried mullet, hush puppies, and swamp cabbage that came to attendees as they walked in the door.

    Mack McCain and others started the event as an "Old Timers Dinner."
