    Officers stay the same
    The Levy County Commission started off the new year by choosing to stick with the same leadership it had last year.
    But the vote did not come until after the commission deadlocked 2-2 on a motion by District 3 Commissioner Marsha Drew (R-Yankeetown)  to name District 2 Commissioner Chad Johnson (R-Chiefland) as chairman and District 4 Commissioner Ryan Bell (R-Chiefland) as vice chairman. Bell and District 1 Commissioner Mike Joyner (R-Morriston) voted against the proposal.

  • Arts Center hoppin' in January

    January at the Cedar Key Arts Center includes ongoing classes and salons, as well as several one day workshops and a gallery opening.
    January’s Gallery will be filled with cozy quilts. This exhibit is open to the community and ready to hang quilts are due at the Art Center by Jan. 3 at 5 p.m. Photographer Christian Harkness will be featured in the Members Gallery. Gallery Reception is Jan. 7, from 5-7 p.m.

  • Cold air could improve fishing

    Happy holidays to all - small and big. Meet us here in Cedar Key so we can celebrate and do a jig.
    Ok, now that I have that out of my system, let’s talk cold front fishing. This is what we have been asking for in the last few weeks. Our fishing has been scattered but good.
    A shot of cold air will drop the water temps and school up our fish. It will move them into deeper holes and pockets of water. This is a very good thing if you know where some good holes are.

  • Register by Jan. 3 for presidential primary

    The last day to register to vote in the 2012 Florida presidential preference primary is Tuesday, Jan. 3. The primary is Jan. 31.  
    Levy County residents can apply to register to vote at the Supervisor of Elections office at 421 S. Court St., Bronson between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 352-486-5163.
    To vote in an election, a person must be registered in the state by the book closing date, which is normally the 29th day before each election.

    Like any good country boy growing up in these parts, Newnan Sanchez knows firsthand about the circle of life, about nature’s delicate balance and how people once lived more harmoniously with the land.
    “I hate to see a lot of Old Florida disappearing,” the 69-year-old Chiefland native said, swaying gently in a rocking chair on the porch of an old cabin where his aunt and uncle once lived.
    “When I grew up, it was one of the smaller states in the Southeast.”

    Cedar Key Museum State Park
    The third annual Festival of Trees event will feature a beautiful display of holiday greenery displayed by local non-profit organizations. The trees will be on display during museum hours of Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. This event is free and visitors can vote for the favorite decorated tree. Please note there is a separate fee of $2 per person (free for children under six) to view the museum exhibits and the Whitman House. For more information, call (352) 543-5350.

    This festive view greets everyone entering Cedar Key - just as motorists cross the No. 4 Bridge. These Christmas lights can be seen on a boathouse/dock on your right. Sure to warm your heart and make you smile, these magical sea creatures not only illuminate the season, but impart a touch of Cedar Key.
