  • Skarupski withdraws, endorses Davis

    On Tuesday, City Commission candidates Heath Davis and Bryan Skarupski called a press conference to announce their positions in the upcoming election. Davis is the former commissioner who did not seek reelection last spring when his term expired. Skarupski, opposing him for the vacant seat left by Commissioner Vanessa Edmunds, who also decided not to seek reelection, has never held a commission seat before.

  • Election Day looms: Two city commission seats and one water district seat at stake

    Cedar Key will go to the polls Tuesday, May 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. City Hall, located at Second and C Streets, will be the polling location. The Cedar Key Beacon asked candidates to respond to the questions below so that voters and citizens may gain a more complete view of the commission.

  • Sharks battle in extra-inning loss at districts

    "Except for the fact that we lost, I think it was the best game we played all season."

    Sharks' baseball head coach Joe Bishop said his team played like there was no tomorrow in their district tournament matchup Monday. Unfortunately, this time there wasn't. Cedar Key lost 7-6 in eight innings to Seven Rivers in the Class A District 6 tournament.

    The Sharks got off to a good start, putting up one run in their first at bat to take an early lead. Seven Rivers tied the score with a run in the bottom of the first, though.

  • Beckham and Hibbits to state track final

    Two members of the Cedar Key Sharks' track and field squad are headed to the state championship this Friday at Winter Park High School. At last Wednesday's regional meet at Bolles High School in Jacksonville, Junior Samantha Beckham qualified in girls' pole vault with a 9' 6" vault, good for second place. She finished behind Lindsey Enders of Holy Trinity, who reached 10 feet. Beckham also turned in a qualifying third place finish in the triple jump, with a best of 32' 7 3/4".

    Sharks' baseball season ends with close game

    The season ended with a heartbreaker against Seven Rivers. The game went into an extra eighth inning and ended with the score at 7 to 6. Coach Joe said "it was the best game of the season." The game went back and forth, first with the Sharks ahead, then tied, until in the eighth inning. With the game knotted at 6-all, Cedar Key didn't score in the top half of the inning and the Warriors put up the go-ahead run for the win.

  • Why race: Looking LARC in the face

    Paul Roesch used to work at McDonald's in Williston, but he struggled there. Going out to tidy up in the dining room, he wasn't sure when to stop wiping one table so he could move on to the next.

    James O'Sullivan wants to work at Hitchcock's, bagging groceries and rounding up carts. So far, though, the only shift that's open is in the evening, and he and his mother prefer that he work during the day.

    David Estep has a talent for folding clothes perfectly.

  • Reflections: Thinking out loud

    A friend and I were talking. Between us we have the world figured out... Well, almost.

    We got to musing on the economy and how things are and likely will be in the near future. Housing is all but at a standstill, and fuel prices are still going up. What we figure, is things are not going to get better anytime soon.

    Now I don't want to sound like doomsday, but we really are not in good shape in this country right now. Not only that, it's going to take a while to get back to somewhere normal again.
