Today's News

  • ‘Lucky boat’ pays off in reds

Hey everyone, I hope everybody was able to hold down the forts with all this wind we’ve had. It has put a major damper on my fishing. Also, put a major push on the tides — we really had some good low tides this week. Good for airboaters, clammers and oystermen — all the above jobs are easier with less water. Well for the most part,  I guess, without getting too technical.

  • Conservation Corner: Grants for weatherization assistance still available

For the past two years the Energy Advisory Panel has been promoting the Weatherization Assistance Program. The mission of the program is to reduce the monthly energy burden on low-income households by improving the energy efficiency of their home. The program is funded by the U. S. Department of Energy and is administered by the Central Florida Community Action Agency, Inc. This is a really good program for several reasons; energy savings, pollution reduction and it helps our neighbors that are economically challenged.

    Community Night in Cedar Key
Spend the evening out by watching the boats of Cedar Key decorated and lit as they follow a water course around the back of Dock Street. When the parade ends at City Park, visit with Santa Clam and enjoy a community-wide potluck. Bring a covered dish if you can. Please call Rose if you are interested in having your boat in the parade at 543-6346.

  • Lighthouse to get facelift

A check from the Florida Lighthouse Association was presented to the University of Florida Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory for repairs and maintenance of the historic Cedar Key Light Station on Seahorse Key on Dec. 9 in Gainesville. The check will be matched by the University of Florida, providing a total of $30,786 for the work. The lighthouse is used by the University of Florida for lodging in connection with its research and education programs at the Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory.

  • Light station opens for holiday season

It took about half an hour for the small fiberglass tour boat to make it from the oyster-encrusted dock at Cedar Key to the small island known as Seahorse Key.
About a dozen passengers, clad in windbreakers and lap blankets, sat quietly, bobbing in unison with the gray waves of low tide. An osprey, clutching a fish in its talons, watched the boat from the channel marker it was using as a perch.
