  • The scalloping gourmet

    Are the crystal clear Gulf waters and the wonders beneath calling your name?

    Break out your mask and fins! Scallop season began July 1 and runs through Sept. 10.

    Anyone who has scalloped before knows the technique of snorkeling along picking scallops off the bottom of Florida's coastal bay areas.

    This is typically done in 2.5 to 4 feet of water - an excellent activity for the whole family to enjoy. Other techniques involve wading and scooping up scallops with a dip net.

  • Fish on Friday: Big Dock will be open for Clamerica

    The Big Dock is this close. Cedar Key's iconic fishing pier will be open for anglers this July 4 weekend, although Lucas Marine Construction project manager Louis Diotte says about three weeks' worth of work remain before Levy County can throw its big "Welcome Home" party.

    "You want to know how long til we're totally done? Outta here?" he asked. "I guess you're gonna hold me to it. I'd make a real educated guess and say the end of July should be pretty close."

  • Students help replant Atsena Otie's eroded shore

    Plants and core logs were placed on the shoreline of Atsena Otie Key on May 8 and Nov. 15, 2007 and again this year on May 8 where the old Eberhard-Faber pencil factory was in operation back in 1896.

    A hurricane destroyed the mill and the town of Cedar Key's infrastructure that year. Cedar Key was re-established at its present location across the channel on Way Key after clean-up was completed at Atsena Otie Key. Unfortunately, construction costs and a sagging market prevented the pencil factory from being rebuilt.

  • Qualifying over, county elections gear up

    Qualifying for this year's elections has ended, and four Levy County candidates find themselves elected without opposition.

    Tax Collector Linda Fugate, Supervisor of Elections Connie Asbell, and School Board members Beth Davis and Paige Brookins each failed to draw an opponent.

    In any race where there is more than one candidate of either party, the candidates will appear on the ballot on Aug. 26.

    Cedar Key will be exploding on Friday, July 4 when the fifth annual CLAMERICA Celebration brings thousands of clam lovers to this island community to enjoy their sweet and savory farm-raised clams.

    Sponsored by the Cedar Key Aquaculture Association, the day will be filled with fun, food, and events for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the City Park and beach on 2nd Street, so bring your blankets and lawn chairs and relax.

  • Reflections: The future wave of fuel efficient cars

    With the advent of high fuel prices, vehicles are bound to change in America. Obviously the cars of the very near future will be smaller and more fuel efficient.

    Unfortunately, the American Government in its wisdom has made it nearly impossible to manufacture a small car such as what we saw in the late 1970s. The Honda CR for instance, a motorcycle with four wheels and a body, is illegal to operate on public highways now. Why is that you might ask?

  • Trouble in Cedar Key: Independence Day

    "When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary..." The Declaration of Independence was published in early July, seventeen hundred and seventy-six. That document listed the reasons the forefathers of the United States found it necessary to separate the original colonies from Great Britain. The grievances were many and critical, aimed primarily at King George, reigning monarch of Great Britain.

  • Fishing Lines: California Dreamin' of Cedar Key tarpon

    Last week I had a simple request. Three guys from California want to come to Cedar Key to catch a tarpon. They had plenty of experience with blue water fish and had already caught sailfish, marlin, tuna and swordfish, but tarpon was still on their "to do" list. The timing was perfect as the full moon was on its way and the tides were stronger than normal.

  • DOT prioritizing county road projects

    BRONSON - Jordan Green out of the Florida Department of Transportation office in Lake City made his annual visit to the Levy County Commissioners to talk about upcoming road projects.

    "We're soliciting work order priorities," said Green, whose office coordinates work in 11 counties.

    The biggest county road project in the DOT's tentative five-year plan is the bridge replacement spanning the Waccasassa River on CR 339.

    Commissioner Lily Rooks, District 4, suggested that two bridges on Cedar Key seem to need immediate attention.

  • Summer Shark: Satellites, our early warning system

    As a computer junkie, I have to admit that I am extremely dependent on technology, but so are each of you, even if unknowingly. After a bit of research (in other words, a quick Google search), one can find that, according to NASA, even something as common as a conversation on a cell phone involves satellites, since satellites relay your voice. More importantly, matters like weather reports on TV and radio depend on satellites, as well. As a result, satellites are becoming increasingly essential in today's society.
