  • Urban Legends: Are you spreading the menace?

    Many of you can relate to having your inbox full of emails, the greater part of which are usually junk. Others are chain emails that sometimes contain compelling facts and information. But how are we to know if these facts are true? Because all too often, they are not.

    Take for instance the widely spread email that depicts the similarities between the lives and deaths of John F. Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln. This particular email is made up of numerous interesting "factual" coincidences, of which only a few are actually true.

  • Fishing Lines: Go where fish are, but watch the lightning

    Scallop season is now in full swing and reports from both the north and south of us sound good. Homasassa and Crystal River both reportedly are having a banner year with scallops plentiful in many popular areas. To the north reports of scallop limits in just an hour or two are common. With inshore fishing waning this time of the year, scalloping is a great alternative to fishing in Florida's July heat. I have never really understood why this area is so good for raising clams, but the main scallop run always seems to avoid us. I guess you can't have it all.

  • Trouble in Cedar Key: They get in your blood

    You know these Cedar Keys, they get in your blood. I sit, as I write, at the Sandspit where G and 1st streets join. There are a couple signs here, the yellow kind with arrows to point the way. Every time a storm comes through, the arrows point out into the Gulf rather than where the road goes. Woe be it for the driver not familiar with the roads or the Spit. The Sandspit. That's where I am. That's where I write.

  • Reflections: A vacation to remember

    It's good to be back home again but now I need another vacation. I'm tired -- You know what I mean, right? A good vacation takes a lot of work.

    When you return you have to unpack, too. After all there's two weeks worth of dirty laundry in your suitcases. Then there's all that mail waiting for you - mostly bills to pay. Oh, there's just so much to do. In my case I returned just in time to go back to work. Yuck! That other stuff is just going to have to wait.

  • Summer Shark: What to do this summer

    The temperature is rising and summer activities are heating up accordingly! There are numerous activities planned throughout the summer for Cedar Key youth, some located here on the island and others in surrounding areas.

    To start with, the Cedar Key Youth Summer Program began on June 23, and is open for any youth ages 6 to 18.

  • Reflection: The future wave of fuel efficient cars

    With the advent of high fuel prices, vehicles are bound to change in

    America. Obviously the cars of the very near future will be smaller and more fuel efficient.

    Unfortunately, the American Government in its wisdom has made it nearly impossible to manufacture a small car such as what we saw in the late 1970's. The Honda CVCC for instance, a motorcycle with four wheels and a body, is no longer legal to operate on public highways now. Why is that you might ask?

  • True Faith: Citizenship in God's kingdom free to all

    One Fall Quarter, an Electrical Engineering professor casually mentioned in his introductory remarks to the students taking his Microelectronic Circuits course that if they simply attended every class and completed all assignments, they would receive at least a grade of C for the course. He also provided this information to the students in written form in his instructions for the course. The lab project and the final exam would give opportunities for those aspiring for an A.

  • Trouble in Cedar Key: To Fernandina and back

    It has been a while since Anne and I took a field trip together. So this weekend past, we drove to Fernandina for a couple overnights. Monday we returned to the Cedar Keys. We used the back routes roughly paralleling the right of way of the old Yulee Cross Florida Railway.

  • Fishing Lines: Report cards -- Good marks overall; Kings held back

    Since it is the middle of the year it is time for mid-term progress reports.

    Trout: The trout bite experienced a slow start but then really got going good. Limits of slot trout (15-20 inches) have been common. April was the best month as usual and gave anglers an abundance of oversized over-the-slot fish. Excellent trout action continued right through June. July and august will be much tougher to find keeper fish as water temperatures soar. The trout get an A this semester in spite of a slow beginning.
