  • True Faith: Are you 'almost a Christian?'

    Not too long ago, I was preaching at a funeral service, and one friendly person came up to me after the service and said with what seemed to me, a little bit of tongue in cheek, "I'm almost a Christian." Perhaps his comment resulted from my attempts to persuade those in the audience who were still alive, to turn, and accept Jesus Christ as the only true hope for eternal salvation.

    Juniors and seniors took the ASVAB test, a career exploration test, last Tuesday. The ASVAB is a prediction test for upper classman, and based on the student's answers, offers a wide range of career options that the student may be interested in. The test is required and is taken in either 11th or 12th grade.

  • Incumbents sweep; sheriff's race is tight

    It was a good day for incumbents in Tuesday's primary as three won re-election and others won their party's nomination for the November election.

    Almost one-third of the county's registered voters, 8,216 out of 25,070, cast ballots in the primary. All results are unofficial. While it was a primary to determine the nominees for the November general elections, three races were being decided as the Republican Party did not mount any candidates to oppose the Democrats.

  • True Faith: Who is Jesus?

    Preachers always notice the listeners who are paying careful attention. Our eyes tend to go to the people who are busy looking up passages of scripture whenever a reference is given. Another strong indication of a good listener is when someone in the audience is taking notes. This is different from drawing pictures. The preacher can also notice the eyes that appear to be open, but that bland stare can also indicate that the rhythm and tone of the speaker's voice and the holy atmosphere is putting the person to sleep.

  • Fishing Lines: Last, best shot at scallops

    Last chance at scallops! Scallop season ends Sept. 10. Most people don't realize that September scallops are more plentiful, have bigger meat and some feel the cooler water of September makes them sweeter. Last chance, the next opportunity for fresh scallops will be July 1, 2009. Better go get'em.

    Inshore fishing has literally had the chalkboard erased. After Tropical Storm Fay with torrential rain and 40-plus-knot winds, from three directions I might add, the trout are likely to re-emerge just about anywhere.

  • Reflections: Angel arrives, amid Olympics, elections

    One of the most spectacular events I've seen in a while has been the opening and closing of the Olympics in Beijing. The two performances were nothing short of a spectacular Cirque du Soleil.

    Literally, thousands of people dressed up in lights and exotic costumes, and performed on the floor, on platforms, and in the air suspended from cables. The extravaganza transformed into colorful images to the likes few have ever seen.
