  • Yearling steers go swimming

    Back on the farm at Twentymile Bend things had settled down after a brush by a tropical wave that dumped 12 inches of rain on top of us. 

    But my father, as usual, was thinking up ways to keep my brother Jerry and me busy. We were dreading what he might come up with next, because on a farm there were so many dirty jobs available. 

    I had spent one summer building fence and didn't want to have that ever again.

  • Children enjoy Discovery Day Camp

    Recently, kids who love the outdoors joined the Refuge Ranger for Discovery Day Camp at the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge.  Local children as well as visitors from Orlando joined in the free fun.

    Withlacoochee Area Residents Inc. will present the third of its 2nd Saturday Summer Concert Series. 

    Rod Sillars will take the stage at the Yankeetown-Inglis Woman’s Club at 7 p.m. Rod's smooth voice and intricate musical style ranges from the classics of Seeger and Dylan, with some upbeat ditties.

  • Improvements under way

    The No. 4 Channel bridge over Havens Creek in Levy County is being repaired and cathodic protection (a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface) is added. Pictured, Pedro Diaz and John Moody of Moody’s Electric, Inc., do work for Pneumatic Concrete Company, Inc., who have until the Spring of 2013 to complete the work for the FDOT at a cost of $951,626.

  • Water now safe to drink

    Residents were able to turn on the taps after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, and drink to their satisfaction as the the Cedar Key Water & Sewer District was given approval from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to allow human consumption of the District’s water supply.

    According to the District's website the new reverse osmosis units are manually on-line and in the past week the final commissioning, training, testing and final adjusting of the equipment has been taking place.

  • Water looks like tea, but those hungry redfish don’t seem to care

    Hello fellow Cedar Key folks.
    Hope everyone is successful at finding ways to stay cool.
    Our water has gotten another dose of river water. A couple days of northwest winds pulled it around the corner to us.
    We now have tea for water as of now.
    As you head southeast it clears up a bit.
    The clarity doesn't seem to mess with the fishing much,  just not the prettiest scene.

  • Chiefland soldier glad to be home from combat tours

    Troy Chancey knows there’s no place like home.
    After a year of being shot at and interrogating enemy combatants in Afghanistan, the 22-year-old Army specialist admits being back in the relatively slow pace of Chiefland is a little strange. But life in the states is something he looks forward to getting used to again.
    “I wanna’ do a lot of the things I missed out on,” Chancey said Friday from the home of his grandparents Janice and Buster.

  • Seahorse Key lighthouse open house a success

    Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge hosted its summer open house of Cedar Keys Light Station celebrating the 158th anniversary last Saturday.  
    The Refuge partnered with Cedar Key Historical Society and Levy County Historical Society in order to bring historians and ambience to the significant historical site managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
    “Refuges are places where the people of today can renew the ties to their cultural heritage by viewing ancient & historic sites,” reads the “Promise” document of 1996.

    Hello! The VBS program at the Methodist church is coming up.
    The VBS is Monday-Friday, Aug. 6-10, from 9:30-11:30 a.m.
