  • Rescue workers respond to two overturned boats

    At about 7 p.m., Friday, July 18, the Levy County 9-1-1 Communications Center received a call reporting an overturned boat with three passengers. Cedar Key Fire and Department of Public Safety Battalion-1 and Medic 5 (Cedar Key) responded to the scene. En route to that call, another call came in for an overturned kayak with two passengers in the water.

  • Cedar Key to get billboard boost

    Cedar Key and Levy County will get a high profile boost with tourists along Interstate 75 in Gainesville during what is typically a slow season.
    Carol McQueen has been in negotiations to design billboards that tout the county’s attractions to people traveling through Gainesville.

  • Florida landmark relocated

    The Cape San Blas lighthouse, located 12-miles south of the city of Port St. Joe on the south point of the St. Joseph Peninsula, is no stranger to the effects of erosion. First lighted in 1849, the lighthouse fell down during a gale in 1851. The light was rebuilt in 1856 but destroyed two months later.

  • 'Dear Gov. Scott, CK oysters need help, too'

    While Cedar Key is famed for its sweet, succulent clams, it was the area’s fat, salty oysters that once ruled the shellfish business.

    But they have fallen on hard times, much like their neighbors to the north in Apalachicola Bay and the local waters were depleted by a drought of several years that made the area waters too salty for oysters to thrive and made them vulnerable to disease.

    The Levy County Sheriff’s Office reports the following arrests:

    • July 19, Pavel Beno, 48, Williston, four counts aggravated assault. Bond $100,000.

    • July 14, James Virgill Boatwright Sr., 50, Chiefland resisting officer W/OV. Bond $550.

    • July 15, Alex Hernandez, 44, Archer, VOP.

    • July 16, Coleman Wesley Jordon, 34, Chiefland, warrant. Bond $50,000.

    • July 14, Tammy Kerr, 40, Chiefland, DWLSR. Bond $1,000.

  • Be safe this summer with children, pets

    TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is reminding everyone to take additional steps to ensure that no child is left unattended in a vehicle this summer. This year, there have been two reported cases in Florida of children dying of heatstroke after being left in cars. Don’t be distracted when leaving your vehicle and take a second look in the back seat to ensure a child is not left behind.

  • New FHP troop commander first female named to post

    The Florida Highway Patrol is proud to announce the appointment of Maj. Eileen Powell to the position of Troop Commander. Her promotion became effective June 16, 2014.

    Powell is the first woman to hold this esteemed position in North Florida and will oversee approximately 101 State Troopers and 10 non-sworn employees.

    Troop B consists of nine counties including: Alachua, Columbia, Dixie, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Lafayette, Levy, Marion and Suwannee.
