  • City to discuss animal ordinance, leash law

    The controversial issue of animal control is expected to be one of the topics discussed at length during the next City Commission meeting May 19 at 6 p.m. The May 5 meeting has been canceled, according to Mayor Heath Davis.

    The current ordinance is outdated and in need of revision, said Chief of Police Virgil Sandlin.

    Residents and visitors alike can now find a cup of joe, ice-cream cones, sandwiches and desserts at the new place in town, Kona Joe’s Island Café, located at sidewalk level on Dock Street.

    The food is fresh, prepared on site, and in these economic times, down right affordable.

  • 2009 Drive-by Hurricane Day - Rescheduled for June 2

    Cedar Key's Third Annual Hurricane Preparation Day is taking a new form this year: a drive-by briefing designed to make the event more specific to the needs of each citizen. On Thursday, June 2 a series of pop up tents will be placed outside behind City Hall, each laden with representatives from numerous Levy County and Cedar Key-specific groups. The event will inform citizens of important facts about storm readiness, as well as what to do after a hurricane.

  • CKPD gets $65,000 stimulus

    Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith is feeling a bit generous lately, doling out some swag throughout Levy County and the Cedar Key Police Department is happy to be on the gift list.

    Smith, who is in his third and final term, was recently notified that the federal economic stimulus legislation passed by Congress has $328,616 available for Levy County under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program.

  • Colson is Cedar Key’s New Mayor

    After three rounds of nominations and voting, Cedar Key commissioners welcomed Sue Colson as the city’s new mayor.

    As Commissioner Heath Davis handed the gavel over to city clerk Francis Hodges, he offered the first nomination for mayor by recommending Commissioner Gene Hodges.

    Commissioner Pat O’Neal nominated Commissioner Sue Colson next and then Commissioner Scott Dennison nominated Davis for another term.

    Davis closed the nominations and the first round of voting began.

    Hodges voted for himself.

    Colson voted for herself.

  • Breaking News Levy jobless rate down slightly in April

    Unemployment in Levy County fell to 10.2 percent in April from 10.5 percent in March, according to a report released Friday by the state Agency for Workforce Innovation.

                      That means 1,770 people out of a total labor force of 17,338 were out of work.

  • One County Commission, School Board vacancies filled

    TALLAHASSEE - Governor Charlie Crist Friday announced the appointment of Marsha Drew to serve on the Levy County Board of Commissioners. Drew will fill the vacancy created by the suspension of William Samuel Yearty and will serve during his suspension.

    The seat vacated by Tony Parker, who was suspended at the same time as Yearty, remains vacant.

    In addition, Crist appointed Cameron Asbell to the Levy County School Board. Asbell replaces Billy Morrison, who resigned after he was arrested in Gainesville.

  • Fire rescue boat deploys in first rescue mission

    The Cedar Fire Department responded to a sixty-five-year-old man’s cries for help off shore about 1:00 a.m. last Thursday morning.

    “We searched for an hour. We finally spotted him. He was paddling off the Big Dock. He was able to come to shore on his own power,” said Fire Chief Robert Robinson.

    Robert Bullis and his dog arrived safely on shore. He declined medical treatment. “He was exhausted. I think the dog was happier to see the ground than he was,” Robinson said.

  • Hospital clears hurdle

    There are no historical or cultural artifacts or endangered species at the proposed site of the Tri-County Hospital project and that has hospital CEO Frank Schupp happy.

    Schupp, who has been working on the project for more than a year was in a brighter mood than ever on Monday when he discussed the progress of the hospital.

    Work has been going on at the site to meet state regulations on locating and saving any artifacts and to certify no threatened or endangered species were at the site.
