  • Nuke plant faces another setback

    The Green Party of Florida and two other groups learned Wednesday that their challenges to Progress Energy Florida’s plans to build two nuclear power reactors in Levy County have standing with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and their petition to intervene has been granted.

    The move could represent another setback to the utility. In May, it announced construction work on the $17 billion project would be delayed by at least 20 months when the NRC refused to give the utility limited work authorization for excavation and foundation preparation work.

  • Natures Landing Condominiums under new management

    In a competitive proposal process, Pam Oakley of Key Reality of Cedar Key and Tina Ryan of Ryan Management Company submitted a joint proposal that was accepted by the Natures Landing Condominium Board of Directors to manage the 37-unit property.

    As of May 1, Pam became the Rental Manager and Tina became the Property Manager. Both maintain their own business licenses and are members of the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce.

     Reports are coming in about a person posing as an employee of a nonexistent "Chiefland Bulletin" business office seeking to update credit card information. NEVER give out this information to a caller. Employees of the Chiefland Citizen, The Tri-County Bulletin, Cedar Key Beacon and Williston Pioneer do not call asking for such information. Always call the business office yourself.

  • Mayor says he’s ready for someone else to take the lead

    Mayor Heath Davis says that as much as he enjoys the post, he is ready to give someone else a turn. “I love being mayor, but I don’t have the time for it right now,” says the father of two. Davis is also bank manager, Suwannee River Management District board member, and runs a family clam business with his father.

    Heath Davis will be mayor for at least three more weeks due to the cancelation of the city meeting May 5.

  • Gift to city sure to spark fireworks

     Commissioner Scott Dennison said he had a present for Mayor Sue Colson, but as the mayor said, it’s a present for all of Cedar Key.

    The gift from Gay C. Cull of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, is the use of her strip of land on Piney Point for the town’s annual July 4th fireworks show that closes the annual Clamerica festival.

  • Disgusting view of sewer to be improved

                      Greg Lang has seen Cedar Key at its worst: the miles of pipes running under this little village are not a pretty sight.

                      Anyone who wants to see it can ask Lang to whip out one of several dozen DVDs made when a video camera rolled through every inch of pipe in the city to document where repairs and replacements need to be made.

  • Animal control ordinance tabled

     The Cedar Key City Commission put off discussion of revisions to its animal ordinance until its next meeting, but one thing they did not delay in Tuesday’s meeting was a temporary pay raise for Public Works director Josh Wilson.

                      City Attorney David Coffey asked that the proposed revision to the city’s animal control ordinance be pulled from Tuesday’s agenda after a council member raised questions of liability.

  • CKWSD approves infrastructure repair

    The Cedar Key Water and Sewer District Board voted unanimously Monday evening to approve a historical joint cooperative project between the City and the Water Board to improve water lines, to be funded by the Community Redevelopment Agency.

    Mayor Sue Colson thanked the CKWSD Board for their cooperation in this shared project.

    The plans call for replacement of faulty pipes, fire hydrants, and sewer mains, as well as street resurfacing and storm water and sidewalk improvements throughout the city proper.

  • Officials plan future improvements during Visioning Day

    Representatives of numerous government agencies, as well as elected officials, stakeholders, and partners gathered at the Cedar Key Library where the City of Cedar Key co-hosted the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Visioning Day, which included a tour of the Cedar Key community.

  • Levy County's jobless rate 11.4 % in June

    Levy County’s unemployment rate broke a new barrier in June rising to 11.4 percent as the state rate rose to 10.6 percent.

    The report released by the state Agency for Workforce Innovation means another 211 persons filed unemployment claims in June.
