  • Breaking News Crist names Johnson to Parker's seat

     Owen Chad “Cracker” Johnson has been named to the Levy County Board of Commissioners District 1 seat, nine months after Gov. Charlie Crist suspended Tony Parker for being indicted on federal charges.

    He will take the oath of office at the start of the commission's regular meeting at 9 a.n. Tuesday in the commission meeting room at the Levy County Courthouse on Court Street in Bronson. County Judge Joseph Smith will administer the oath.

  • BOCC seeks grant for clammers

    The Levy County Commission has approved seeking a $121,000 federal stimulus grant to benefit the clammers and oystermen at Cedar Key.

    Commissioner Lilly Rooks brought up the non-agenda item at the Commission meeting on Tuesday morning and the commissioners immediately agreed to take up the matter.

    Rooks said she had received a letter from the Levy County Soil and Water Conservation Board the afternoon before saying the money is available and the grant application must be submitted by April 6.

  • Lobbying the Legislature

    Daniel Rose brought a letter he had composed to Florida’s state legislators. David Estep quietly rehearsed his statement. On the bus trip to Tallahassee last Wednesday, they and 15 other mentally handicapped clients of Levy Association for Retarded Citizens prepared themselves to go to the state capitol and remind lawmakers that the economy was hitting them harder than almost anyone in Florida.

    “I’m concerned about these budget cuts,” said Estep.

    “I’m worried LARC might have to close its doors.”

    Seahorse Landing Condominium Rentals is the first business in Cedar Key to receive an endorsement for Green Lodging from the Florida Department of Environment Protection.

    Qualifying as a green business is not difficult, said Janet Blackwell. “It’s easier than you think - one step at a time, and once it’s implemented, it’s easy.”

  • Kayaker paddles 1000 miles to save oceans

    Margo Pellegrino is a kayaker with a cause. She’s paddling 1,000 miles from Ft. Pierce, Florida to New Orleans, Louisiana to get people thinking about the ocean. The Cedar Key islands marked her half way point.

    “I’m on an outreach mission for the ocean,” Margo said. “I want people to be aware that the ocean is on the brink of collapse.”

  • Conservancy buys scrub-jay habitat for CK Scrub

    A vital scrub-jay habitat platted for subdivision development was purchased this week by The Nature Conservancy and will be donated to the Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve for permanent preservation.

    The Levy County-approved platted subdivision, Shell Mound Estates, is an undeveloped 125-acre property located on the east side of CR 347, just south of the intersection of CR 326, adjacent to the Cedar Key Scrub.

  • County veterans honor fallen heroes

    About 100 people gathered Sunday at the Cedar Key Cemetery to honor fallen soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guard during the annual Memorial Day Ceremony.

    Nearly all in attendance joined in as Sandy McQuitty played the guitar and sang God Bless the USA. She also performed America the Beautiful. A Williston resident, McQuitty is currently in her fourth year as President of the Ladies Auxiliary 10733 Orange Lake.

    Hosted by the Marine Corps League Tri County 1018, the memorial ceremony has grown dramatically since its inception seven years ago.

  • Sponsors and citizens alike rally around free Movies in the Park

    Last month more than 100 people brought blankets and lawn chairs to City Park at sunset for the inaugural showing of Movies in the Park. The crowd was treated to a free family-friendly feature film shown outside in the naturally beautiful theater of Cedar Key.

    As word gets out, organizers expect even more people to attend this month’s family entertainment feature film June 20 at sunset, 8:15 p.m.

  • CRA Board accepts solar panel bid, Greg lang as official director, and Chamber's Creswell house plan

    Cedar Key is steadily going green--not only have volunteers recently planted 62 live oak trees on the island, but as was decided at the last Cedar Key Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) meeting, the Community Center will soon be powered by solar energy as well.

  • Cedar Key simpler brings home two prizes at international event

     The International Herbal Symposium held at Wheaton College validated Nysie Watson’s decade long experience as a simpler, or healer, where she garnered two second place prizes, one in the Elixers category and another in Creams and Lotions.

    “I feel like I’ve been validated in all my years of simpling,” Watson said about her new status as international accredited award winning herbal product designer.
