  • Fire Marshal investigates Dock Street fire

    The State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a fire that broke out on Dock Street earlier this month. The Feb. 12 fire was noticed by two Frog’s Landing patrons as they left the restaurant around 11:30 p.m. The women returned to Frog’s to tell staff that they saw flames in the breezeway that runs below the restaurant between Water’s Edge and Niko’s Bait Shop. While one Frog’s Landing employee called 9-1-1, another grabbed a fire extinguisher and rushed to the breezeway.

    Workforce housing and a youth center are the two projects that Cedar Key could benefit the most from, according to many residents who gathered last week at the Cedar Key Community Redevelopment Agency workshop to discuss needs and offer suggestions of how to spend the remaining CRA funds.

  • Permitting process delays King Road Mine by one year

    Levy County's hopes for growing business in the county has been dealt a second setback with the announcement that Tarmac America is moving the start date for construction of the King Road Mine from 2010 to 2011.

    The company said the delay is due to a longer than anticipated permitting and review schedule for the limerock mine in south Levy County. Company officials had planned on a four-year  process but now expect it could take five years.

  • Saturday night crimes keep police busy

    While en route to his residence Saturday night, Cedar Key Police Chief Virgil Sandlin observed a truck speeding at 39.25 mph in a 25 mph zone on Gulf Boulevard.

    Sandlin activated his emergency lights. The vehicle sped up and attempted to elude his marked police vehicle. The driver of the truck was unable to negotiate the corner at Whiddon Avenue and proceeded south on Gulf Boulevard to Palmetto Drive. Apparently the suspect was unaware that Palmetto is a dead end street, Sandlin said.

  • Rosewood teen accused of shooting friend

    Waylan John Campbell, 18, of Rosewood, was arrested Tuesday for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, culpable negligence and making a false report to law enforcement, said a spokesperson for the Levy County Sheriff Office.

  • Cedar Key is Florida’s number one community

    The USDA has named the City of Cedar Key as Florida’s Rural Community of the Year for 2009.

    Located on the Gulf Coast of Levy County, Cedar Key’s belief in partnering to protect the community’s history, environment and working people peaked the interest of UDSA Rural Development, and led to the award that will be officially presented the community next week.

  • Community plans 'Cedar Key Christmas'

    A group of residents is working to coordinate local happenings during the holiday season, as well as add new ones and make the month-long festivities an annual event.

    A Cedar Key Christmas will include activities from Thanksgiving throughout December, and will be centered around a permanent fixture in City Park: a Cedar Key Christmas tree.

  • Park Place garners Green Lodging designation

    Cedar Key’s green movement passed another milestone last Friday with the largest business to date receiving the Green Lodging Program designation from the Florida Department of Environment Protection. Park Place Condominiums, managed by Linda LeRoy, became the third local business to receive the certification. The state made it official through email Sept. 4.
