  • Register by Jan. 3 for presidential primary

    The last day to register to vote in the 2012 Florida presidential preference primary is Tuesday, Jan. 3. The primary is Jan. 31.  
    Levy County residents can apply to register to vote at the Supervisor of Elections office at 421 S. Court St., Bronson between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 352-486-5163.
    To vote in an election, a person must be registered in the state by the book closing date, which is normally the 29th day before each election.

    Like any good country boy growing up in these parts, Newnan Sanchez knows firsthand about the circle of life, about nature’s delicate balance and how people once lived more harmoniously with the land.
    “I hate to see a lot of Old Florida disappearing,” the 69-year-old Chiefland native said, swaying gently in a rocking chair on the porch of an old cabin where his aunt and uncle once lived.
    “When I grew up, it was one of the smaller states in the Southeast.”

  • Donations needed to replace dead palms

    Several palm trees planted along the sidewalk leading from City Park to the boat launch have died and Cedar Key resident George Oakley is leading a drive to replace them.
    Oakley pledged at the Dec. 20 meeting of the Cedar Key City Commission to get the ball rolling and has delivered a $150 check to City Hall to pay for replacing one of seven of the trees that have died and been cut down.

    This was the third year the Cedar Key Aquaculture Association hosted a Christmas boat parade held in conjunction with Community Night in the Park on December 17.
    “Although the number of entries was the same as last year, the crowds more than doubled,” reported Rose Cantwell, who organized the event.

    If you have questions about options for Medicare, Medicare/Medicaid, Disability, Supplemental Insurance, Part D Prescription Drug Plans, or Medicare billings, there is a place to go for answers.
    Visit a SHINE volunteer and get the answers. SHINE is a program with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs for one-on-one counseling.  SHINE provides free, unbiased and confidential assistance by trained volunteers.  If you cannot come to a site call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-262-2243.

  • Cedar Key Welcome Center announces holiday hours

    The Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center will be closed during the Christmas holiday from Friday, Dec. 23 through Sunday, Dec. 25.
    We will resume normal business hours on Monday Dec. 26.
     

  • Schools foundation gala moves to January

    The Levy County Schools Foundation will host its annual STARS Gala on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m., doors open at 5:30 p.m. at Chiefland Elementary School.   
    STARS — Students, Teachers, and Respected Supporters - Gala was formerly known as the Superintendent’s Gala and is the non-profit Foundation’s premier fundraising event.  

  • Barber retires after 5.7 million meals

    When Candy Barber started working as a substitute in the  Chiefland schools lunchroom she only wanted to have a job that allowed her to be home with her children, Royce and Janet, when they were not in school.
    On Jan. 4 Barber, who estimates she has served or overseen the serving of over 5 million meals, will retire from her post as coordinator of food service for the county’s 13 schools. She is also president of the Florida School Nutrition Association.
