  • The one that didn't get away

    Tom Fazackerley of Lancashire, England recently spent several days on Cedar Key with his friend Dave Lumpkin fishing and enjoying the Gulf Coast. For several days, the pair fished but only caught fish that were too small to keep. On the last day, Lumpkin bought a crab and shared half of it with him. At the end of the expedition, Fazackerley had caught 40 black drum. The two had a difficult time hoisting the fish aboard and had to get assistance from two men in a boat who had a basket. After the photo session, the pair released the fish so they could become breeders.

  • Suwannee Basin gets standards for Clean Water Act

    Back in 1972, the Federal Clean Water Act was passed by Congress and President Nixon, setting guidelines to ensure that our nation's rivers remain healthy and clean.

    It has taken most states a long time to take action.

    Some like New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Kansas, got their acts together quicker than others by drawing up widespread measures.

    Many others, including Florida, dragged their feet - waiting until their backs were against the wall.

  • Fish on Friday: Big Dock will be open for Clamerica

    The Big Dock is this close. Cedar Key's iconic fishing pier will be open for anglers this July 4 weekend, although Lucas Marine Construction project manager Louis Diotte says about three weeks' worth of work remain before Levy County can throw its big "Welcome Home" party.

    "You want to know how long til we're totally done? Outta here?" he asked. "I guess you're gonna hold me to it. I'd make a real educated guess and say the end of July should be pretty close."

  • Qualifying over, county elections gear up

    Qualifying for this year's elections has ended, and four Levy County candidates find themselves elected without opposition.

    Tax Collector Linda Fugate, Supervisor of Elections Connie Asbell, and School Board members Beth Davis and Paige Brookins each failed to draw an opponent.

    In any race where there is more than one candidate of either party, the candidates will appear on the ballot on Aug. 26.

  • Celebrate the Fourth with Clamerica

    Cedar Key will be exploding on Friday, July 4 when the fifth annual CLAMERICA Celebration brings thousands of clam lovers to this island community to enjoy their sweet and savory farm-raised clams.

    Sponsored by the Cedar Key Aquaculture Association, the day will be filled with fun, food, and events for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the City Park and beach on 2nd Street, so bring your blankets and lawn chairs and relax.

  • DOT prioritizing county road projects

    BRONSON - Jordan Green out of the Florida Department of Transportation office in Lake City made his annual visit to the Levy County Commissioners to talk about upcoming road projects.

    "We're soliciting work order priorities," said Green, whose office coordinates work in 11 counties.

    The biggest county road project in the DOT's tentative five-year plan is the bridge replacement spanning the Waccasassa River on CR 339.

    Commissioner Lily Rooks, District 4, suggested that two bridges on Cedar Key seem to need immediate attention.

  • Commission gives retiring Eller nice bonus

    Cedar Key's City Commissioners were in a charitable mood at Tuesday night's meeting, as they voted to OK money to a devoted longtime worker who just retired plus a local church that needs help rebuilding a sidewalk.

    Jimmy Eller, who worked in maintenance for 20 years, recently retired. As a thank you for his hard work and service, the commissioners broke new ground by awarding him a bonus topping $1,300.

    Folks in the audience gave the commissioners an ovation for their thoughtfulness.

  • When emergency strikes, can responders find you?

    There's an old joke about how to find a burning home or other fires.

    The fire chief says "What's the address?" and the people say, "Just drive down the road until you see smoke," according to Cedar Key VFD Fire Chief Robert Robinson.

    But to Robinson and other firefighters in the area, finding a home quickly during an emergency is no laughing matter. That's why the Cedar Key Fire Department and several others started distributing reflective metal plates with house numbers.

  • Big Dock to open for anglers July 4

    "It'll be here when Cedar Key's gone," said Louis Diotte of Lucas Marine Construction, overseer of the project. "You're talking about solid concrete. This is what the intentions were when they designed it."

    "It's on schedule. We're going to open it for fishing the 4th of July, unless something dramatic changes that," said Diotte. "They're having a problem getting the tile needed for the restrooms. That could hold it up if the city says people can't fish on the pier without having a restroom to use."

  • Lions adopt a portion of SR 24

    You may have noticed the new Cedar Key Lions Club Adopt-A-Highway signs on Route 24 posted at the #4 bridge going out of town and two miles out coming into Cedar Key.

    The Cedar Key Lions Club members have committed to pick up the litter four times a year along that two-mile stretch highway heading into town, ending at the #4 bridge.

    The community beautification project is the inspiration of Lion Gina Montgomery whose diligent work and coordination with the Florida State Department of Transportation has made the project possible.
