  • More Comp Plan elements ready to go

    Cedar Key City Commission had to tread some old ground on the way to clearing the rest of the Conservation and Coastal Element and Future Land Use Element for transmittal to DCA.

    The commission had examined those two contentions elements line-by-line, starting at a meeting two weeks ago, in the presence of a very few fiercely interested citizens.

  • City may look to acquire some private roads

    The last item on Tuesday's City Commission agenda was, as Mayor Heath Davis pointed out, technically a CRA matter - paving of roads. What the commission needed to decide, however, was how to proceed with the planned paving of several segments of private road that intersect and impact city-owned and maintained property.

    Commissioner Pat O'Neal was immediately against it, saying it was unreasonable for the city to commit to paving roads that the owners had undertaken to build on their own.

  • Visit to old Depot Key shows history slipping away

    Atsena Otie, formerly Depot Key, is one of thirteen islands managed by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge.

    The purpose of the Refuge is to protect the habitat for a variety of wildlife species, especially wading birds and shorebirds.

  • Incumbents sweep; sheriff's race is tight

    It was a good day for incumbents in Tuesday's primary as three won re-election and others won their party's nomination for the November election.

    Almost one-third of the county's registered voters, 8,216 out of 25,070, cast ballots in the primary. All results are unofficial. While it was a primary to determine the nominees for the November general elections, three races were being decided as the Republican Party did not mount any candidates to oppose the Democrats.

  • Fay 'a good exercise' for Cedar Key

    "It was a good exercise."

    City Commissioner Sue Colson was out driving around town early Saturday morning, checking out the debris trail left by Tropical Storm Fay and rejoicing that it wasn't worse.

    "We were blessed," she said. "I just saw Robert (Fire Chief Robert Robinson) down by the firehouse, looking things over, and there goes James McCain (she waves at a passing truck) - all Cedar Key's babysitters are out here, checking up."

  • Community Center (Lions Club) open for storm shelter

    "What we're finding is when low tide was supposed to go out it didn't go out. So we have concerns and information that water will be as much as 4 to 6 feet over high tide."

    High tide is at 6:48 this evening and 6:06 a.m. Saturday, said Lt. Evan Sullivan, .The shelters are at:

    - Cedar Key Community Center, the old Lion's Club, at 809 Sixth Street.

    - Yankeetown Elementary School in the cafeteria, 4500 West Highway 40.

  • Hospital asks for extension

    The Tri-County Hospital is moving forward with construction, although more slowly than originally planned, said Chiefland Planning Director Bill Hammond.

    Hammond updated the City Planning Board on the hospital's progress at its regular meeting Thursday evening.

    Hammond said the hospital has asked for an 60-day extension on its construction start date, a move that is agreeable to the city commission.

    "They don't want to issue the permit until next year for the money to be in for the budget."

  • LARC Softball Challenge hits one out

    "We can hit," said Betty Walker, executive director of Levy Assocation for Retarded Citizens. "We just can't run."

    Before Saturday's classic showdown featuring LARC staff and clients against the polical candidates of Levy County, Walker was explaining her strategy for a LARC victory.

    "We got to hit the ball out."

    LARC won the two-inning tilt by a bare 4-3 margin, but aggressive baserunning, pitching and defense were as much a factor as power at the plate.

  • Still committed to making the grade

    Even the best schools in Florida have hurdles to overcome. For the third year in a row, and the fourth year out of five, Cedar Key School earned an "A" for its FCAT results. Unlike last year, however, Florida's smallest public school did not make AYP, or Adequate Yearly Progress.

    AYP is a standard of the national No Child Left Behind program, Cedar Key Principal Sue Ice explained.
