  • Airport homes to get fire hydrants

    Approximately 50 homes in the unincorporated area near the Cedar Key airport Lewis Landing Field will soon have access to fire hydrants. The eight-inch pipe was delivered Monday and work is scheduled to begin next week.

    Roughly 1600 feet of the high-density polyethylene pipe will lie 20 feet below the bottom of Goose Cove, connecting the Cedar Key water tower to the intersection of SW 164th Ave. and Airport Rd. From there it will run the length of the airstrip and into Piney Point, a stretch close to two miles of pipe.

  • Cemetery Point Park will be more accessible

    With the permit process nearly complete, work is expected to begin this month at Cemetery Point Park to make the public facility compliant with ADA requirements.

    ADA, which stands for Americans with Disabilities Act, guarantees by law equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, governmental services, commercial facilities, transportation and telecommunications.

  • Roadwork begins Monday

    Paving contractor, Art Walker Construction, Inc. will be setting up to resurface streets in Cedar Key between Monday, Nov. 24 and Monday, Dec.1. Phase I calls for the work to begin on Hodges and Gulf Boulevard, starting on the west end of Hodges at Watson Circle and working down to Whiddon Avenue and Gulf Boulevard. The duration of the project is approximately three months. Affected Streets: Hodges, Andrews Circle, Gulf Boulevard (to the intersection of Whiddon), East Point Rd. (City owned East end), Cemetery, Indiana Ave., Ingleside Place, Paroda Ave.

  • Bob Hastings sworn in as school superintendent

    Robert “Bob” Hastings was sworn in as Levy County School Superintendent Tuesday morning, making history as the first Republican elected to a countywide office.

    “We keep in mind in all we do that we are bettering our system, thereby helping our children,” Hastings said. “We need to remember that we are working with our students so that they can have a good and healthy and productive future.”

  • CRA OKs Whiddon Ave. safety study

    Last week the Cedar Key Community Redevelopment Agency approved a traffic and school safety proposal for Whiddon Ave., allowing for a field review of existing conditions. Hall Planning & Engineering, Inc. will perform the review and conduct an analysis of Whiddon, H St., 8th St, and Cedar Key School. The review is scheduled to begin immediately and will cost the CRA approximately $14,000. HPE will provide a written report of findings and present its recommendations for improvement to the city.   • The unkindest cuts of all

    Harold McCain is lucky. A re-evaluation of his handicap and cuts to his Medicaid-funded services almost resulted in his being denied daily transportation to the LARC (Levy Association for Retarded Citizens) adult day training center in Otter Creek.

    "Oh, that would have been terrible," said Harold's mother, Thelma McCain of Cedar Key. "He hardly ever skips a day, even when he's sick, because he's afraid he'll miss something."

  • Break-in at Cypress Station

    According to Lt. Evan Sullivan with the Levy County Sheriff's Office, the Sheriff's Office received a call on Sept. 29 after midnight at 7690 State Rd. 24, at a business known as the Cypress Station.

    Upon arrival, they found that the business had been forcibly entered by unknown suspects and an undisclosed amount of currency taken.

  • Coastal Cleanup nets big haul

    Saturday's Coastal Cleanup of the area around Cedar Key and the Lower Suwannee Refuge was a big success. Toxic and entangling debris that kills seabirds, fouls fishing grounds and pollutes shellfish beds was hauled from various tender spots around the Levy County coastline.

    Co-organizer Sue Colson was cautiously thrilled, saying that this year's numbers were almost equal to last year's, after a very slow start in the morning.

    "I was so down early Saturday," she said. "I didn't think anybody was going to show up, it was so slow. But they did, and look how much we got done!"
