  • Eco-Friendly islanders harness the sun

    Last week the Andersons became the first Cedar Keyans to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint by installing solar panels to their home on 4th Street.

    “The whole idea of living sustainably has long appealed to us,” Pat said. “We want to do our part.”

    Carolyn has always been an avid recycler, Pat said, and for him sustainability and conservation was imprinted at an early age. “My grandma fussed at me all the time for standing with the refrigerator door open.”

  • Red Cross also responds to personal disasters

    When people think of Red Cross volunteers and disaster support, what usually comes to mind are hurricanes, tornados and earthquakes, said Ian Dyar, Emergency Services Director of the American Red Cross North Central Florida Chapter.

    “But single family house fires are disasters, too,” he said.

    The Red Cross takes individual disasters seriously and responds just as actively to them as it does to large scale disasters.

  • Tin Canners converge on Islands

    More than 40 Tin Can Tourists arrived in vintage motor homes or pulled classic travel trailers to spend the weekend at Sunset Isle RV Park and Motel in Cedar Key.

    “It’s a fun little gathering. You‘ve got a nice town. We enjoy coming,” said Bob Kilpatrick of Cross Creek, dressed in a Gator Booster cap and a “Have camper, will travel” t-shirt.

  • Local Writer Opens Law Office in Cedar Key

    Pierce Kelley has been keeping a full schedule lately.

    Since the start of the year he has opened a new law office and released Asleep at the Wheel, his latest novel.

    The new office at 3011 D Street in the old Cactus Rose Coffee Shop specializes in family law and consumer protection matters like deceptive lending practices in mortgages and credit cards. As a former associate at Three Rivers Legal in Gainesville he hopes to use his vast experience to assist residents of Cedar Key with their legal matters.

  • Lutterloh looks like a movie set

    With only the front façade and a partial outside wall still standing, the Lutterloh Building now looks like something from an old film set.

    “I’ve been asked more than once by people walking by if we’re making a movie here,” Don Padgett said with a laugh.

    The movie set look, however, will not last long.

    The current restoration of the Historic Lutterloh Building in downtown Cedar Key is on time, said Padgett, the Project Superintendent for Anglin Construction.

  • Teresa Watson gets FEMA to cough up money for Cedar Key Dock

    BRONSON — Teresa Watson is not the sort of person you should owe a debt.

    She will collect the money.

    The Board of Commissioners recently commended Watson, a financial clerk in Levy County Clerk of Courts Danny Shipp’s office, on Jan. 6 for getting the Federal Emergency Management Agency to agree to cover cost overruns at the Cedar Key dock rebuilding. The dock, which was reopened in July 2008, was damaged by tropical storms and hurricanes in the devastating 2004 Hurricane Season. The dock had to be replaced with a new stronger concrete structure.

  • God and politics blamed in firing

    Newly minted Levy County Property Appraiser Oz Barker says he fired a veteran employee on his first day in office because he did not have confidence or trust in her, but two leaders in the Tri-County NAACP said he told them God directed him to do it.

    And they think the reason is a little less divine — that Barker traded a promise to fire her in return for votes to help him win the office in the November election.
