  • Cedar Key to get new recycling center

    As part of the city-wide conservation movement, a recycling group in Cedar Key will be placing three recycling trailers in the lot across from the Market. The trailers will be painted dark green and local artists will be given the opportunity to paint the sides for a unique Cedar Key impression, said city public works director Josh Wilson.

    The plan will remove the current trailer from Sundance laundry and provide greater capacity and easier access for residents to recycle.

  • Roundabout likely for Whiddon Ave fix

    Representing the City of Cedar Key, CRA interim Director Greg Lang spoke to the School Board of Levy County Tuesday about Whiddon Ave. and options to improve safety throughout the school zone and surrounding area. Options presented include placing a three-way all-stop or a continuous all-yield traffic roundabout at the intersection of Whiddon and H Street.

  • City appoints Form Based Code Committee

    City Commissioners each designated one community member of their choice to be appointed to the Form Base Code Committee to incorporate some and replace all of the current Land Development Regulations and building codes.

    Dr. Earl Starnes, retired architect, planner, and professor, was selected by Gene Hodges.

    Phil Parker, Plum Creek Executive, was selected by Scott Dennision.

    Vanessa Edmunds, photographer, writer and former city commissioner, was selected by Pat O’Neal.

    Ada Lang, building designer, was selected by Sue Colson.

  • Trap-Neuter-Release helps 400th Cedar Key cat

    In cooperation with the River City Community Animal Hospital based in Jacksonville, the Williston group Sheltering Hands and the Town of Otter Creek, the Cedar Key Trap Neuter Release program reached a milestone last week: the 400th cat to get neutered. A total of 29 cats were spayed or neutered in the week long process, including 14 felines from Cedar Key and 15 from Otter Creek.

  • Teen dies after Thursday wreck

    On Chiefland teen is dead and two Cedar Key teens were injured in a nighttime crash about 4.5 miles outside Chiefland on Thursday, Feb. 12.

    Jeremy Alan Smith, 17, Chiefland, the driver of the truck, died from his injuries Monday night at Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

    Injured in the crash were Cheyenne Larkin Wells, 16, and Laura Alice Odell, 19, both of Cedar Key. They were treated and released from Shands.

    Another passenger, Cody James Norwood, 18, of Chiefland, sustained minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle for medical care

  • City unveils new Web site

    The City of Cedar Key debuted its own Web site this week, complete with numerous photos and relevant information for residents and visitors alike.

    With separate pages for the marina, police department, city hall, and more, the new site will prove useful and informative to many internet users.

    “I want it to be very usable,” said Josh Wilson, Web site Administrator and creator. “We’ll be continuing to add to it and working to make it easy to use for everyone.”

  • Coast Guard to stop monitoring analog distress signals

    The US Coast Guard announced last week that beginning Feb. 1 it will only monitor digital 406 MHz frequencies for mariners in distress.

    This means that mariners and aviators who have not upgraded to the digital format will be unable to send distress signals using analog equipment transmitting on the 121.5 or 243.0 MHz frequency.

    “There problem with the older format,” said Petty Officer Robert Simpson, “is that the analog signal doesn’t give an actual location – just a 500 square mile area.”

  • Tony's Cedar Key Clam Chowder will compete nationally

     Tony’s Seafood Restaurant will be among 30 of the nations best restaurants and chefs to cook more than 3,000 gallons of chowder for visitors at the Schweppes Great Chowder Cook-off held June 6 in Newport, Rhode Island.

    The competition will feature a little Southern cooking in the heart of New England thanks to a locally owned restaurant.

  • Police Chief wants surveillance cameras in City Park

    Police Chief Virgil Sandlin asked the City of Cedar Key Commission Tuesday night for approval of a plan that would place video cameras in public areas, with the first to be placed at the city park, marina and big dock.

    “The big selling feature is the protection of our children,” Sandlin said. “We have a lot of sexual predators in Levy County, two of which were recently released.”
