  • Smoke and video testing of pipes to begin soon

    As part of the planning for the proposed Phase II Streets and Utilities program the Cedar Key Water & Sewer District and Cedar Key Community Redevelopment Agency are cooperating to perform inspections and testing of the downtown sewer system.

    A detailed video inspection and smoke testing of the sewer system in the downtown area of Cedar Key is scheduled to start on March 9. Technicians from Altair Environmental Group of Longwood Florida will be working in Cedar Key approximately three to four weeks performing various inspections and tests to the sewer system.

  • Pipe exploration will tell Water District which areas need most work

    You may have seen a small trailer in the streets of Cedar Key with the name Altair Environmental Group on the side, and wondered why it’s moving all around the island.

    The trailer is home base to a crew that is going street to street, manhole to manhole, to inspect every sewer pipe in the downtown and surrounding areas looking for cracks and damage.

    “We’re looking for holes in the side of the pipe, cracked pipe, anything that might cause a problem down the road,” said project superintendent Bill Kirk.

  • City prepares for 45th annual Old Florida Celebration of the Arts

    Excitement is in the air once again as Cedar Key prepares to transform into an open air gallery of art on April 18th and 19th when the Chamber of Commerce presents the 45th annual Old Florida Celebration of the Arts. Artists will line Historic Second Street from 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. These fine artists and fine craftsmen will show off their paintings, jewelry, pottery, sculptures, photography, and much more! Over $10,000 will be awarded to artists and their ribbons will be on display Sunday.

    The Beacon is creating readers' photo galleries of Cedar Key character and beauty. Next month we'll look at structures, landmarks and buildings, so send us your photographs of your favorite Cedar Key architecture. New or old, fancy or run-down, small or large, the possibilities are endless.

  • Teachers’ personal laptops, cell phones subject to confiscation

    With the unanimous passage of new Anti-Fraud policy 7.23 last week, Bob Clemons, Director of Finance for the School Board of Levy County, has been given the additional duty of Fraud Investigator, authorized to confiscate both district and personal employee property.

    “Any irregularity, that is detected or suspected . . . shall be reported immediately to the Director of Finance” who will decide “whether pursuit of an investigation is warranted,” the policy states.

    Java lovers can now enjoy a cup of fresh ground coffee at the Barefoot Artist Gallery located on historic 2nd Street.

    “Customers can get coffee-to-go or sit at tables and enjoy the art,” said Carmen Day, artist, owner, and operator of the gallery. Those who prefer to sip outdoors will find themselves well accommodated in the garden area. “When the weather’s good (it) should be nice to sit out there,” Day said.

  • Qualifying period starts Monday

    Anyone wishing to campaign for the City of Cedar Key Commission or the Cedar Key Water and Sewer District Board must complete the necessary paperwork next week during the qualifying period Monday, March 16 at 9 a.m. until Friday, March 20 at 12 p.m.

    Each candidate is required to submit a form designating a treasurer, open a campaign bank account, sign a loyalty oath, provide a statement of financial intent, and read chapter 106 of the Florida statutes. Qualified individuals will be given two handbooks, one for the candidate, one for the appointed treasurer.

  • City reconsiders Creswell House

    The Cedar Key Commission is reconsidering its decision last month regarding the Chamber of Commerce’s request to use the city-owned Creswell House.

    The structure, located on 2nd Street next to the Cedar Key Library, is in dire need of repair, according to Commissioner Scott Dennison. “It needs a comprehensive inspection by a licensed professional,” he said. Dennison’s preliminary assessment reports water damage, paint decay, mold, mildew, plumbing issues, termite damage, and broken stairs.

  • Finally, a plan to fix Whiddon Ave

    There'll be no more speeding through the school zone on Whiddon Avenue, if the Cedar Key City Commission has anything to do with it. Tuesday, the commission heard a presentation by Rick Hall of HPE Engineering with a proposal for traffic calming solutions for the Whiddon corridor. The project has been a long time coming, because in addition to being the street on which Cedar Key School is located, Whiddon is also, as Mayor Heath Davis called it, “the bottleneck between Way Key and the back islands, Hudson Hill, the airport, and most of the residential part of Cedar Key.”
