  • 21 teachers get pink slip

    Twenty-one veteran teachers across Levy County received letters last week notifying them that their annual contracts would not be renewed for the upcoming 2009-2010 school year.

    The 21 educators, each with at least 30 years of teaching experience, were either part of the extended DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Plan) program or retired and then rehired back on annual contract.

    “Those teachers were paid at the top of the pay scale based upon their years of experience,” said Candace Dean, Director of Personnel for Levy County School District.

  • Rubio’s statewide amibitions defer to Gov. Crist

    Marco Rubio is not sure which office he will be running for in 2010, but whatever statewide opportunity comes available, he is ready.

    Rubio, who has formed an exploratory committee, addressed the Levy County Republican Executive Committee’s Lincoln Reagan Memorial Dinner on Friday, March 27.

    Rubio’s choice of which office to seek is complicated by the retirement of U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez. The Republican has announced he will not seek re-election next year and the iffyness of Gov. Charlie Crist’s plans to seek the office.

  • Artist brings unique images to Old Florida Celebration

    Photographic artist Bob Senesac will return to the Old Florida Celebration of the Arts for the second time to display one of a kind monoprint images. “All my images started as photographs,“ he said.

    His work is the result of more than four decades of creativity. He started out in the dark room developing film and printing images but now employs a combination of technology and good old fashioned elbow grease to produce his art.

  • Cedar Key Lions throw a party to thank town for 40 years of support

    The Cedar Key Lions Club thanked the town for 40 years of support with an Ice Cream Social on March 24th. From 4 to 7 p.m. the Cedar Key Community Center rocked and partied to the music of the Cedar Key's Dock Street Band while residents of all ages, from babies to great grandparents, enjoyed eating ice cream and cake, dancing, and receiving birthday party balloons as well as a free Cedar tree seedling as part of the Lions' "Put the Cedar Back in Cedar Key" initiative.

  • Sheriff offers special needs database

    In January 2009, the Levy County Sheriff’s Office implemented a new program designed to assist citizens of Levy County who have special needs.

    The program includes a database of special needs citizens of all ages such as Alzheimer’s patents, autistic persons and others with special needs.

    This database is accessible from the dispatch center and includes individual specific information on each entered person such as type of special need, contact person, home address, and specific instructions for first responders on how to best assist that person.

  • Video: Suwannee River flood warning

     Warnings have been issued for flooding along the Suwannee River in Levy County as a result of spring rains farther north at the waterway's headlands.

    Levy County boat ramps along the Suwannee will close at dusk Saturday, said Levy County Coordinator Freddie Moody. Moody also said Gov. Charlie Crist has included Levy County in a declaration of an emergency for areas affected by the flooding.

    But in Levy County, it is the estate of Kathryn F. Causey, an accountant who died in January 2008, that is trying to stave off foreclosure by having the lender produce the promissory note.

  • Smoke and video testing of pipes to begin soon

    As part of the planning for the proposed Phase II Streets and Utilities program the Cedar Key Water & Sewer District and Cedar Key Community Redevelopment Agency are cooperating to perform inspections and testing of the downtown sewer system.

    A detailed video inspection and smoke testing of the sewer system in the downtown area of Cedar Key is scheduled to start on March 9. Technicians from Altair Environmental Group of Longwood Florida will be working in Cedar Key approximately three to four weeks performing various inspections and tests to the sewer system.
