    All indicators for the 2016 fishing season look good. I have been fishing in all depths of our area waters lately and it just seems as though there are tons of juvenile fish of all species.

  • CK Arts Center Sponsors an art-filled home tour

    Cedar Key, a tiny island community in the Gulf of Mexico, is known as a sleepy fishing village surrounded by gorgeous scenery and abundant wildlife. But just under this surface is a thriving art community. For years the island has been a magnet for artists who live there permanently or visit regularly and two decades ago the enclave of 700 permanent residents was endowed with an arts center which sponsors classes, exhibitions, a summer art camp for kids, and a juried arts festival each spring.

  • Saturday lecture on NC Biological Station

    Come meet Mike Allen and the Nature Coast Biological Station (NCBS) team Jan. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Cedar Key Library. NCBS seeks to improve the conservation and management of natural resources in the region, through stronger partnerships with local, state and federal agencies, improved public outreach and education, and better learning opportunities for students.

  • Super Shark spellers in county bee

    This year’s winner for the Levy County District spelling bee will be traveling to Tallahassee for the next level of competition for the third time.

    Katlynn Karwan, of Williston Middle School, beat out top spellers from elementary and middle schools throughout Levy County in a contest on Friday, Jan. 8 at the Bronson Middle High School cafeteria. This is her third time winning the County Spelling Bee.

    “I think it may be her year,” School Superintendent Bob Hastings said.

  • On the Wind: Prayer flag workshop

    A quilted prayer flag workshop with Gayle Wolfe will be held on Monday, Jan. 11, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Cedar Key Arts Center.

    Participants will choose a theme for a flag that might convey a sense of peace or prayers or positive affirmations or hope or healing or whatever is on your heart at this time in life. You will use your imagination to embellish your flag with paper, photos, text, stitching, beads, found objects, buttons etc. creating an artistic connection between your heart and others.

    Happy new year everyone! I have great news. For the past, oh say, 10 years I have been trying to get some help for the dwindling stocks of Cynoscion Arenarius, aka Sand seatrout (sometimes I call them silver trout just because it sounds better).

    From Jan. 10 through Jan. 17 Lions Clubs around the world will volunteer for a special week of service dedicated to helping nearly 800 million people facing hunger and poverty.
