  • ATV deaths bring warnings

    In response to two deaths involving riders on ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) the Levy County Sheriff's Office has issued a reminder about laws governing the vehicles' use and offered some safety tips to prevent users from being a victim of an ATV accident.
    In 2006 the Florida Legislature passed a law allowing ATV's to be operated on any public roads or streets during the daytime hours on an unpaved roadway where the posted speed limit is less than 35 miles per hour by a licensed driver.

  • Police activity runs the gamut

    Cedar Key Police Chief Virgil Sandlin reports a range of arrests and warrants in the past couple weeks. Once again, drugs, trespassing, DUI’s and some vandalism prevailed.

  • No license means golf cart driving prohibited

     C. C. of Cedar Key writes: “I fell behind on my child support payments and the State of Florida’s Department of Revenue suspended my driver’s license. It’s going to take me a month or so before I’ll be able to get it back. I can still drive my Golf Cart around the city of Cedar Key, can’t I?”

  • Weekend proves jail has revolving door for Otter Creek teen

    Some folks might say Brian Smetana, 19,  just had a bad weekend. The Otter Creek resident is in Levy County Jail after being arrested twice — once on a charge of shooting into an occupied dwelling and, the second time after being found naked in the bedroom of a 15-year-old — in less than 24 hours.

  • Bicycle patrol pays off in drug arrest

    When the City of Cedar Key Police Department started training their officers on the police bike protocol, nobody guessed that their most recent drug arrest would come courtesy of the bicycles and no seat belts.

    On April 13, two Cedar Key Police Officers — Perry and Cosseboom — were with Levy County Sheriff's Detective Roger Bell getting familiar with the new police bikes early in the evening. They were in the Jernigan Avenue area and noticed a car approaching with two men in the front seat who were not wearing seat belts.

  • Cedar Key woman charged in Williston Burglary

    Four people, including one from Cedar Key, were arrested on Monday on a variety of felony charges relating to a break-in at a Williston home where about $20,000 in belongings — a safe, jewelry, prescription pills —plus a car were taken, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Department press release.

    It appears all media outlets continue to influence the "oil market" and I am sure if they quit giving them this notoriety prices of crude oil would drop sharply. They are constantly promoting big business which apparently enhances their price gouging techniques. They do well enough without the media assistance, for sure. I am sure if you looked up greed in the dictionary you would see faces of all the "oil barons" throughout the world. Also, some of the nation's biggest retailers would definitely be among those "rich and famous" photographs.

    It appears the Arts Festival of 2008 was successful and the Chamber of Commerce did another great job of encouraging the most qualified artists to attend this annual event. Thanks to each and every one of you that gave so much of your time and the great effort contributed by all of you in making this weekend a success.

    Your Police Department was somewhat busy over the weekend but most of the crowd abided by the rules of the road. We, too, appreciate the cooperation of all those attending the festival, as you are part of the fun and relaxation enjoyed by every one in attendance.

    Friday, March 21, there will be no school, so please use caution when traveling on SR24 and the streets of our wonderful little city, due to the children walking, riding bicycles, or playing near their respective homes. We never know when a loose ball will cross the street followed by an unsuspecting child, so please be fully aware during your travel time around the community. Always respect our older generation and children, as we love and appreciate all of them very much.
