• Cedar Key FFA to send five teams to state finals

    Three months of work, dozens of after-school pizzas and showing up at 4:30 a.m. to cut up fresh fruit all paid off this past week for the Cedar Key FFA chapters.
    The FFA will be sending five teams to the state Ornamental Horticulture finals later this month at the University of Florida.

    Cedar Key is on its way to the Ornamental Horticulture CDE in Mayo, Florida. The teams have been preparing for three months and all of their hard work will be put to use. Lauren Bartholemy, Laia Gore, Sarah Bartholemy, Taryn Epperson, Mikayla Pope, Jemima Cahours, MacKenzie Kirkbride, Ashlyn Allen, Taylor Davison, Nathaneal Brinkman and Brooke Allen will all be competing today.

  • Cedar Key School honored for its recycling efforts

    Cedar Key School was recognized Friday by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for outstanding efforts in 2011 to promote recycling.
    Cedar Key students, collecting about 550 pledges to recycle in FDEP’s staterwide K-12 Recycling Pledge Card Contest, pushed their school to the top three in the state.

    Florida Forest Service Awards $110,000 to the Levy County School Board and Levy County Board of County Commissioners
    Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam today announced that the Florida Forest Service is distributing $55,397 to the Levy County Board of County Commissioners, and $55,397 to the Levy County School Board as a result of revenue generated from operating the Goethe State Forest.

    It's been one month now that my other half, Tyler Beckham, has been stationed in Japan. (For those of you who are geographically challenged like I am, that's the opposite side of the world.) In dealing with the multiple hardships that dating someone who is an entire day ahead of you with little communication brings, I have come to a conclusion that I think will make day to day life much easier for those of us left at home.   • Jenny Biermen is named Cedar Key School’s 2012 valedictorian

    2012 Senior Jenny Biermen is the valedictorian; she has gone to Cedar Key School since 6th grade. In her years at CKS she has taken all the required classes to graduate as well as marine science, teacher’s aid and the work program - and while doing all this managed an almost a perfect GPA.
