  • Hastings on FCAT: “We must raise academic standards”

    FCAT results are in and they're a mixed bag, to say the least. Levy County School Board saw a report by Director of Secondary Education Patrick Wnek on the schools' grade-by-grade results in each subject, plus comparisons to state numbers, and a lead-in to the county's Deep FRI training for enhanced reading instruction.

    Wnek showed a slide of grade-level scores in reading, math and science county-wide depicting gains or losses in the last three years.

    The school district budget and the security of teacher positions was again top in everyone's mind at Tuesday's meeting of the Levy County School Board.

    Fourth Grade Living Science Projects

    Fourth grade has been preoccupied with raising and studying animals such as fiddler crabs, African dwarf frogs, and millipedes. The students are studying the creature's adaptations and environment.

    Cedar Key High School’s Senior Beta Club is inducting a new member today--Jenny Bierman, a freshman. The club is celebrating with an event coined “Beta Week.” Senior Beta centered every day of this week around a theme for the school.

  • A year in education

    From new science standards and deep budget cuts to teacher awards and a new Superintendent, education in Levy County experienced many newsworthy occasions in 2008. The following are highlights from this year’s important headlines.

    January:

    Superintendent Cliff Norris announces he will not run for re-election, opting instead for retirement.

  • Homecoming Week!

    The week of Homecoming was filled with excitement from pep-rallies and parades to costumes and reunion parties. The week kicked off with Super Hero Monday, and Tuesday the students and teachers arrived as villains. Wednesday was the day to dress as a pirate or princess or both. When Thursday rolled around the school was filled with various Disney Characters. Friday was a day of purple and gold, and Sharks showed their spirit with temporary tattoos and paint.

    Tuesday, Oct. 14 - FCAT Math Retakes as well as Picture Retakes. Be sure to bring in most recent school pictures to be able to have retakes.

    Wednesday, Oct. 15 - Middle School FFA trip, PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test)

    Thursday, October 16th- FCAT Retake Make-ups, PTO meeting at 6 o'clock, XC Levy County meet at Williston 4:30.
