The amount of trash produced by each American per day is astounding, not to mention the amount generated throughout a lifetime. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, as of 2006, Americans toss out trash at the incredible rate of 4.6 pounds per day per person! If you do the math, that leads to 251.3 million tons each year. And even though this trash is conveniently taken out of your hands every few days, you can't help but wonder what actually happens to the trash.

The temperature is rising and summer activities are heating up accordingly! There are numerous activities planned throughout the summer for Cedar Key youth, some located here on the island and others in surrounding areas.

To start with, the Cedar Key Youth Summer Program began on June 23, and is open for any youth ages 6 to 18.

As a computer junkie, I have to admit that I am extremely dependent on technology, but so are each of you, even if unknowingly. After a bit of research (in other words, a quick Google search), one can find that, according to NASA, even something as common as a conversation on a cell phone involves satellites, since satellites relay your voice. More importantly, matters like weather reports on TV and radio depend on satellites, as well. As a result, satellites are becoming increasingly essential in today's society.

The Cedar Key Media Center at Cedar Key School will be open on Wednesday during the month of June from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for Accelerated Reader Testing for Cedar Key Students.

It will be open in July on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.

The AR test for Sunshine State Readers are available and students may test on these books.
